http://www.wcax.com/Global/story.asp?S=13203578 Springfield man sentenced for murdering baby • White River Junction, Vermont - September 23, 2010 • "There is absolutely nothing I can say that will ever take that pain away," Andrew Bedner said. • The now 30-year-old Bedner offered a tearful apology in court Thursday for the beating death of his infant daughter Cadence. The baby girl was just 6-weeks-old at the time of the incident. "She was only two months old," said Kelly Hill, the baby's mother. "I never got to see her first real smile, or hear her first giggle. I never got to see her take her first step." • The crime happened two years ago inside a Wall Street apartment. Bedner told police he struck the child on at least two separate occasions because she would not stop crying. • Under a plea deal with the state, Bedner received a 30-years-to-life sentence for second-degree murder-- all suspended-- with 14-years to serve. But the mom of the baby girl told the court it's not enough. • "I feel that here is where he is supposed to be-- put away. But I do not agree that serving just 14 years is enough justice for the entire life that he robbed my daughter of," Hill said. • It's a crime against a helpless child that prosecutors say has been all too common in recent years. • "It seems that we are not giving young people the tools they need to properly parent," Windsor County State's Attorney Robert Sand said. • Cadence was taken off life support two weeks after the incident. And while nothing can ever be done to bring her back, Bedner said he hopes his sentencing will bring closure for everyone struggling to deal with the senseless crime. • "Hopefully the healing process can begin for them," he said. "Just let her know that I love her and I am truly, truly sorry." • Before handing down the sentence, Judge Patricia Zimmerman called this a horrendous crime. One she said Andrew Bedner will have to life with for the rest of his life. • Adam Sullivan - WCAX News •
