An old 5,500 gallon underground fuel tank was unearthed behind North School this week for disposal. Now watch a time lapse film of the 2 hour job compressed down to less then 4 minutes.
October 22 press release:
The North School Preservation Society Inc., in conjunction with Southern Windsor County Regional Planning Commission along with the Springfield School District are taking the first steps in saving the old North Springfield School.
On Thursday October 28, at 8 a.m., Gurney Brothers will remove an old, unused fuel tank buried on the premises. This will enable an assessemnt and test of the surrounding soil for possible contaminants. In addition, the tank still has fuel that needs to be removed and properly disposed of. An evaluation of the contents, cleaning the tank and surrounding area will be conducted by KAS Inc. of Williston, Vt., for lead and other contaminants. Work will continue Friday the 29th if needed. Alan Liptak of KAS with others will also do a lead paint and caulk assessment on the old school itself, and further testing will be conducted in the next few months.
The funding sources for this project are from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 1 and the Southern Windsor County Regional Planning Commission Brownfields. Dan Potter, assistant planner for SWCRPC, is coordinating the project.
The North School Preservation Society and the Springfield School District are in talks to convey the school property to the North School Preservation Society in accordance with a favorable vote of the public at Town Meeting in March.
The members of NSPS are excited at the progress being made and look forward to restoring the school and making it a community center for area residents. Visit the NSPS website at nsps.awardspace.us to learn more about the group and its efforts.
