Oxbow trips up Cosmos

SPRINGFIELD — Oxbow came into its interdivisional game at Springfield with an 0-2 record, but both those losses were against teams (Lake Region and Rivendell) that are expected to be strong contenders for the Division III title. Consequently, when the Olympians hung on for a 46-37 win over the Cosmos at Dressel Gym, it was not a major surprise.
“Lake Region not only beat us, but they just beat Division I Burlington and the Rivendell coach is talking about a state championship, so we were up against a couple of tough teams,” Brian Musty, the Olympians coach said.
For Springfield coach Brodie Ladue, it was a frustrating evening as her charges missed consistently from close in and failed to hustle up the floor on defense.
“It’s not like we don’t practice those layups and we have to get back on defense,” Ladue said. “Then there was the eight missed free throws in the first half.”
While the final score put the Olympians on top by a comfortable margin, there was one point in the final quarter that it looked like the Cosmos might have one last surge in them.
With Springfield trailing 42-37, Cosmo Brittany Grant-Paul had a shot go in and then out. Had that gone, it would have cut the lead to three with still more than a minute to play. As it turned out, the Olympians got the final four points to end the game.
Ladue thinks one of the reasons that the Cosmos didn’t click was that her girls in the last couple of years have not been in many tight games.
“We’re not used to that kind of pressure,” she said. “That’s probably my fault. We’ve got to find more people to handle the ball.”
The pivotal moments in the game occurred at the start of the second half right after the Cosmos rallied from 10 down in the second period to trail just 25-24 at intermission.
“I thought we had momentum going for us to start the second half,” Ladue said.
That was not the way it turned out as Oxbow ran out to a 10-2 advantage and took what was a game-controlling 35-29 lead after three periods.
Springfield looked in trouble most of the first half as the Olympians were boxing out on defense, finding the open man and squaring up to the basket and making the shots. Oxbow led 16-9 at the end of one and got the lead to 25-14 with 3:31 before the half.
However, the rest of the first half belong to Springfield junior guard Liza Fontaine as she had eight points, including a couple of long 3s. This enabled the Cosmos to close to one before the break.
Still Musty, who has been coaching Oxbow for 13 years, thought it was one of the better Springfield teams he has seen.
“They’ve been changing coaches a lot down here ,” Musty said. “It she stays around they are only going to get better. I like what she is doing.”
Morgan Johnson was Springfield’s top scorer with 11 points. For Oxbow, Karley Hamilton had 10 and Meghan Hart and Mckenzie Garone each had eight.
Next for 0-2 Springfield is a Jan. 4 game at Fair Haven. Oxbow hosts Stowe on Dec. 28.
