SPRINGFIELD — Two fires in the same apartment building within two hours of each other Saturday have police looking for help from the public to solve what they believe is an arson attempt.
The first fire at 6 Reservoir Road was discovered at 4:05 a.m. and occurred just inside the common entrance to the building on the first floor.
“Several personal items belonging to one of the tenants were on fire,” Vermont State Police Detective Sgt. David Sutton noted in a report issued Wednesday.
Springfield firefighters quickly brought the situation under control with only minor damage to the foyer and left the scene only to be called back out to the same building at 5:20 a.m. for a report of a new fire on the second floor.
They also quickly knocked down that fire, which was contained to a bookshelf, with only minimal damage resulting.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that the fires were caused by incendiary means,” Sutton noted, asking anyone who may have information to call him directly at 773-9101 or the state’s 1-800-32-ARSON hotline or Springfield Police Department Detective Patrick Call at 885-2113.
