Some positive flooding news

Springfield Parks and Recreation Department celebrated the first day of winter by flooding the skating rink at North School. The flooded rink should be frozen solid by Friday morning if temps continue to stay below freezing.

The size of this ice rink is 50 by 100 feet. It has been a popular winter recreation site for generations. It is one of two public skating rinks in town but the North School rink is always ready first because it has an earthen berm around it. The town's other ice rink needs some snow accumulation. It relies on snow pack berms to contain the water. That rink is in a small park known as The Commons which is located on a hill just above downtown.

In the late 1980s, a warming hut for skaters at the Commons had gotten so run down that it was considered unsafe for Springfield residents. A new one was built and the old hut offered to North Springfield. Villagers were so offended by the offer that a group of volunteers formed, committed to building a better warming hut then the new Commons hut. This was accomplished at virtually no cost as all the materials and labor were donated. Constructed of concrete blocks, the hut has enough seating space inside for twenty or more people and it has restrooms too.

Both warming huts will be open Fridays from 5:00-8:00PM, Saturdays 1-8 PM and Sundays from 1:00-5:00PM when the ice is good. Other weekdays, and vacation hours, will be posted at the huts. Parks and Rec. also needs help to oversee both huts when they are open so please call the Parks and Recreation office during business hours at (802) 885-2727 if you might be interested in volunteering. You can also call to find out if the rinks are suitable for skating and for availability or special events.
