McDonald’s says no new construction planned

SPRINGFIELD — A few days before Christmas, demolition crews tore down a long-vacant house at the corner of Routes 106 and 11.
The building had over the years housed everything from a real estate and financial services office to an antique shop, but in recent years it had been unused, despite its prime location at a busy corner near the Springfield Shopping Plaza and right next to the McDonald’s restaurant,
The rumors around town have everything from McDonald’s building a new restaurant, a new parking lot, or both, but according to McDonald’s Corp. spokeswoman, nothing is planned in Springfield.
In a series of e-mails, Nicole DiNoia, communications manager for McDonald’s USA, LLC, Boston region, said the rumors had no basis in fact.
“There are no projects currently planned for that site,” DiNoia said.
McDonald’s USA last year purchased the land and buildings associated with the restaurant and the adjacent, now demolished building, from Springfield Realty Corp., for close to $850,000, according to records on file at the Springfield Town Clerk’s office.
Bill Kearns, Springfield’s zoning administrator, said there are no requests pending for the use of the parcel. He said representatives of McDonald’s came in October and requested a demolition permit.
He said McDonald’s representatives came in to combine all the parcels that it had purchased earlier in the year, that the restaurant now sat on four consolidated parcels, which included the small parcel where the house stood, two parcels occupied by the restaurant, and then a “weird-shaped” parcel north of the restaurant and includes the land between Route 106 and the Black River.
The demolition was done on Dec. 20. “It’s like nothing had ever been there,” Kearns said of the job.
Cough Inc., of Rutland, which operates the restaurant, had leased the land under the restaurant previous to Springfield Realty Corp., a local firm made up of various members of the Young family, which also owns the shopping plaza.
Springfield Realty sold 3.28 acres in May for $842,000, according to Town Clerk Meredith Dexter Kelley.
Cough Inc., is now listed only with $50,000 in personal property, which is the equipment used to run the restaurant, according to Lister Arnold Lashua.
Lashua said McDonald’s bought everything except the personal property in May.
Cough Inc., which operates McDonald’s restaurants in Rutland, didn’t return calls for comment.
