Bartonsville Grange foresake Springfield fire victims

The Grange hall in nearby Bartonsville donated its facilities for a special New Year's eve benefit event but then abruptly canceled it for a better deal offered them.

Last Thanksgiving eve, the Rice family lost their home at 158 Union Street to a devastating fire. Many local citizens were moved to donate money, clothing and other goods to help them out. A benefit event was also planned. The Bartonsville Grange agreed to host it New Year's eve. Bands were booked for entertainment. Then to everyone's surprise, the Grange elected to cancel it at the last minute in favor of some paying customers who wished to rent the hall that same night. No word yet when and if the benefit will be re-scheduled but if it is, it's a sure bet the organizers are looking for an alternate site to host it.
