Springfield holds off Windsor

WINDSOR — Springfield and Windsor are among the many teams this winter that are having trouble scoring points in big bunches. Consequently, when the Cosmos got a seven-point lead in the fourth quarter, they started playing keep-away. While they were not terribly efficient at it, they were good enough to hold on for a 54-43 win over Windsor in a Monday night Marble Valley League game.
Even though the Cosmos kept turning the ball over while trying to drain minutes off the clock, Windsor constantly failed to capitalize and could never get closer than seven points in the final period.
“We just don’t have enough answers on offense right now,” Windsor coach Harry Ladue said.
Windsor’s best chance to get back in the game came in the third period when it cut the lead to 35-31. However, inefficiency at the foul line and failure to take care of the ball did them in.
“If we could have made our foul shots we could have cut it to two,” Ladue said.
One player who had no trouble scoring was Springfield senior guard Ethan McAllister, who had a 23-point game on a variety of shots, including a left-handed hook.
“I haven’t been playing very well this season,” McAllister admitted. “So it was nice to have a good game.”
McAllister also said that he wasn’t at his best physically as he has been battling flu symptoms all day. He said that while he didn’t feel particularly well, the ball felt real good in his hands.
Also playing well for the Cosmos was Kirk Perham, who had a 15-point night and a solid floor game.
“He’s a heady kid,” Springfield coach Pete Peck said. “We’ve got some kids that can play.”
The win squared Springfield’s record at 3-3 while Windsor drifted back to 2-2.
While U-32 seems to be one of the better teams in Division II this year, there are many other teams that are still trying to find their way.
“Everybody is thin this year,” is the way Peck explained it. “A lot of teams have to grow up and we happen to be one of them.”
Springfield and Windsor have had some dandy games over the years and with both teams still looking for that right combination, it appeared like it might be another tight night as the two ran up and down the floor and after one period the Springfield lead was just 14-13.
Then McAllister went to work in the second quarter as he drained two 3s, had an opposite-handed hook shot in the lane drop through and drove for two more points to give him 10 points for the period and push the Cosmos to a 31-22 lead at the half.
“He’s a big part of what we do,” Peck said.
As the game moved through the third quarter and Windsor was unable to make its free throws (six misses), the Yellow Jacks had a hard time taking a big bite out of the Springfield lead and were down by nine, 46-37, as the game moved into the fourth quarter and could never get back in it.
Jacob Page had a 17-point game to lead the Windsor scorers. Kyle Cushing added 8.
Windsor goes to U-32 on Saturday while Springfield hosts Mill River on Thursday.
