Car stop leads to arrests for drugs

A motor vehicle stop for defective equipment at about 10:22 p.m. Monday on Interstate 91 in Springfield led to the arrests of four Massachusetts residents for possession of illegal drugs.

During the car stop, Vermont State Trooper Michael Studin said he smelled the odor of burnt marijuana emanating from the vehicle. The registered owner of the car, Darnell Cortes, 21, of Springfield, Mass., admitted that marijuana had been consumed inside the vehicle and consented to a search of the vehicle.

Studin's search which turned up about 12 grams of powder cocaine, 8 grams of marijuana and several Oxycodone pills. Police then arrested Cortes and his three passengers, Anthony Baez, 25, Jaylu Laboy, 24, and David Rodriguez, 23, all of Springfield, Mass., for possession of the drugs.

Police imprisoned Cortes for lack of $5,000 bail, and his passengers for lack of $10,000 bail, at the Southern State Correctional Facility in Springfield. All four individuals were ordered to appear today in Vermont Superior Court in White River Junction.

  2. Exactly, all "flatlanders" are criminals. Let's have ALL cars with out-of-state plates pulled over and searched by law enforcement. Heck, the fact that they don't have Vermont plates is probable cause!

  3. That should happen. How many times have you or anyone gone down Clinton Street toward the interstate and seen out of state (NH included) cars going WAY over the speed limit? I got off 91 a few days ago and was doing around 50 and a car from Mass passed me going at LEAST 70. It doesnt matter the cops are out investigating the recent break ins right? baaaaa haaaa yeah right. I really dispise paying taxes.

  5. Has anyone noticed the lack of stories on this blog? We used to hear all kinds of stores about the town or whatnot and now it is like a concerted effort to not allow anything that will evoke comments on here. Just sayin!

Really??? Fisrt off get your grammer correct before typing, secondly, I was born and raised in Springfield, my mother lives there, I spend over $200 a year in hunting permits in VT a year, attitude like that is why nobody wants to come into the state and spend money to help your economy, and also why there's no economy in VT and forces people to move south to get a better life because VT doesn't want economic growth.
    Thanks.
