There’s a lot to enjoy in this laugh riot staged by director Donald Gray and his spirited cast, from zany jokes about nuns who yearn to be in showbiz to gentle pokes at the Catholic Church and nuns.
In the first act the premise is presented: 48 of 52 nuns who were poisoned by a toxic vichyssoise concocted by Sister Julia, Child of God, have been laid to rest, but the convent has run out of money to bury the last four. A talent-show fund-raiser is needed to finish the job.
Audiences will hear the history of the Little Sisters of Hoboken and meet them: the bossy Mother Superior (Linda Dunworth) and her good-natured but envious number 2, Sister Mary Hubert (Cindy Hughes); Sister Amnesia (Pam Church), who has forgotten who she is since a crucifix fell on her head; Sister Leo (Robin Keefe), who uses dance as her daily prayer; and the tough-talking Sister Robert Ann from Brooklyn (Debbie Robling).
Each nun steps into the spotlight for a song and dance number. Mother Superior sings of her years as a member of a tightrope walking family in “Turn Up That Spotlight.” In "Growing Up Catholic," Sister Robert Ann sings of the changes in the church, displaying a true sense of devotion. Sister Mary Amnesia recovers from her wide-eyed state of forgetfulness, singing "I Could've Gone to Nashville," and Sister Leo performs the ballet, “The Dying Nun.” The show's final big tune, a rousing gospel-inspired song about saints, "Holier Than Thou," is led by Sister Mary Hubert in a vocally unrestrained performance.
Nunsense will be on stage at the Springfield Players’ Studio on South Street on October 28-29 at 7:30 pm, on October 30 at 2 pm, and on November 4-5 at 7:30 pm . Tickets are $15 for general admission and $12 for seniors and students.
