The North School located just off Main Street in North Springfield has served the children of this community for over seventy years. Built over a hundred years ago, its doors were closed by the Springfield School District in 1984. In 2009, the 5 acre property was in danger of being sold off for private development. Several life long residents, new residents, former students and other interested persons formed what is known today as the North School Preservation Society. These individuals were interested in preventing private development and maintaining the school as a Historical Community Center, playground, public park and sports field for the entire community to enjoy year round.

The Society subsequently petitioned the town to turn the property over to them. All the hard work was finally rewarded on Town Meeting day (March 2, 2010) when the Society was granted a transfer of property with a vote of 1,676 to 401. We received our non-profit status and the property is scheduled to be officially turned over to the Society later this month.

Currently there are walking trails and the playground is open. The warming hut and ice skating rink will be open during much of the winter season. Along with the upcoming conveyance of the property come the increased expenses and the need for more financial responsibilities. The Society has had several fundraisers this year, including a book sale and large yard sale from donated items. They have also received some very generous donations, as well as matching gifts. To be able to keep up with these matching gifts comes the need to up our fundraising responsibilities.

We are also looking for interested people in the area to join us. We meet at 6:30 p.m. the 1st Tuesday of the month at the warming hut, right on the grounds of the old North School, access way is off lower School Street in North Springfield. You do not have to be an alumni or have attended the school, nor do you have to live in North Springfield, just have an interest in seeing a beautiful Community Center develop out or the ruins of an old historic Vermont schoolhouse.

Please visit us on facebook as well as our web site which is presently dedicated to Springfield’s 250th birthday.
