Shumlin touts downtown redevelopment
By SUSAN SMALLHEER
Staff Writer
SPRINGFIELD – Gov. Peter Shumlin told Springfield business leaders Thursday there was more downtown redevelopment going on in Springfield than any other community in the state.
Shumlin spoke at the annual meeting of the Springfield Regional Development Corp., which was held at the Great Hall at the former Fellows Gear Shaper complex.
“It’s a remarkable recovery story,” the governor said on the anniversary of his election last November.
Shumlin, who grew up in Westminster West and Putney, said he used to drive by the Fellows complex for years and hope that a way could be found to redevelop the former machine tool plant, which dates to the end of the 19th century.
“Will it survive? I have driven by this building all my life,” the governor said. “I tell the Springfield story everywhere I go.”
Shumlin listed recent development projects in town that ranged from the new Springfield Parent Child Center to the proposed Winstanley biomass project in the North Springfield Industrial Park. Other major redevelopment projects include the former Jones & Lamson Machine Tool Co. in Springfield, where brownfield cleanup has started after years of study and delay.
Shumlin said that some parts of Windsor County were hard hit by Tropical Storm Irene, and he noted the Simon Pearce company in Quechee, an internationally known glassblowing firm, spent $2 million in 18 days to recover from the flooding.
Unlike its neighbors, Springfield escaped largely unscathed because of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ North Springfield Flood Control Dam.
Shumlin said that the state got “whacked” by Irene, which he said could be the worst flood in the history of Vermont.
“The level of devastation and the amount of pain” was enormous, Shumlin said.
But, he said, the most important thing was how Vermonters reached out to one another and helped each other recover.
Two months later, he said, the recovery is well under way, with hundreds of roads and bridges repaired and reopened.
The three major roads still closed are in Windsor County: Route 131 in Cavendish, Route 106 in Weathersfield and Route 107 in Stockbridge. Route 131, which was dubbed the Cavendish Gorge due to its severe washout near the village of Cavendish, is due to reopen this weekend.
Members of Shumlin’s economic development team accompanied him to Springfield, including Patricia Moulton Powden, deputy secretary of the Agency of Commerce, who at one time in her career was the executive director of the Springfield Regional Development Corp.
Bob Flint, the current executive director, outlined the year of accomplishments for the 50 people gathered in what is now being called The Great Hall, part of the $13 million development of the Fellows complex by One Hundred River Street LLC.
Rick Genderson, one of the principals of One Hundred River Street LLC, said the redevelopment project was a little behind schedule as the former factory and mill had contamination issues that kept popping up. Springfield Medical Systems is moving its doctors’ offices and clinics into the building, and Genderson said that he was negotiating with several businesses, including two restaurants, to move into the building. Another potential tenant is an assisted living facility, he said.
Genderson, who is from Washington, D.C., said The Great Hall, a large three-story, clerestory space that serves as the new Pearl Street entrance to the reconfigured building, would serve as a public space for Springfield and also serve as an art gallery.
“We’re close. We should be done in the next month,” Genderson said.

ReplyDeleteAn article about the 1%.
No one in Springfield gets anything from this.
My observation is empty store front after empty store front. There is absolutely no reason to go into downtown Springfield. It's a dump, and it looks like a dump. It is a low income town, and will always remain so. Unless you get rid of all the affordable (ie low income) housing which of course attracts what---why low income people of course.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the low income housing. Get more tax payers rather than tax TAKERS and this town "may" have a chance.
ReplyDeleteThere are so many things this town could "bank" on, but all is being ignored.
Seems they're only interested in catering to the drug dealers, the welfare suckers and whatever else decided to begin to grow roots here.
modern day nazism error.. uhh. Socialism here in Springfield VT.
ReplyDeleteWho thinks Springfield won the war now?
Top ten on a bombing list??
Facists got bailed out
You GOT bombed out........
Wake up, you are born into slavery and bondage to face a slow genicidal death while paying your slave tax, just like the rest of us.

To comment on the other posts above. The town is in the shape and state it is because of the way the town is run to the way the school system is run. Read the neoptism post on the town budget story and compare it to the names on the school budget commitee. Do you see the corelation? check out the names of the budget commitee.for the school. Far too long people in this town have voted for their friends and neighbors to their own expese once their "friends" raise the budgets in town or with the school. One of the school board members works for the school. whether by salary or by grant, their job is is still with the school and they never recused themselves from budget talks. She needs to go as do many of the people in the town offices and at the school board.
ReplyDeleteThe basic premise that the town operations and school operations have not followed ethical rules makes me sick and then in that article someone is quoted as saying "well it isnt a big deal" come on idiots!
AGREED!!!!
ReplyDeleteIm so curious who the school board member is that also works for the school? I think you need to get your facts checked.
ReplyDeleteHave my facts VERY straight...wanna sling mud cause we can out a whole lot of information that should be kept private!
ReplyDeleteAnother Springfield tough talker! You have your facts? Then let's see and hear them, otherwise shutup and sitdown. It's folks like you that keep Springfield from moving ahead. By the way, I think it is time for Homer Simpson to packup and move on. Let's put our face on something that Springfield has accomplished over the years instead of a stupid cartoon contest that we were "lucky" enough to win.
ReplyDeleteI have a fealing, that ALL OF YOU should tell your secrets HERE on THIS BLOGSPOT !!!
ReplyDeleteExpect US
Well I am pretty sure that NONE of the board members are employed by the school. Actually not pretty sure... I AM SURE. SO until you can prove otherwise, find something else to complain about...May I suggest in another town!

Um too the dumbass who commented about the school board member. Being employed by the school does not have to consist of a salaried position. Having a financial interest with a program that is directly involved with doing business with the school is unethical when you do not recuse yourself from the voting that includes your program. So how bout we turn that issue over to the Vt Dept of Ed. Lets see what they think...Good luck douch! LOL
ReplyDeleteI was directly commenting to the person who stated several times in this post and another one that there was a school board member who was employed by the school. And why so vague... If you know who it is say the program they are involved in and how it is related to the schools, and or who the person is that is an employee. And I dont think any name calling is needed. I am not a douche, or a dumbass, but thanks anyway. Obviously there is alot of mis information out there, and you should right it immediately for all of us to see.
ReplyDeleteCrazy the talk on the streets what is going on in the schools...And what about that inappropriate frosting comment! Huh that's professionalism.
ReplyDeleteOn another note, one benefit of living in a small community like Springfield, is that we all know our neighbors, and it shouldn't be such a shock that a community employee also want to be involved in helping to run our town, or be involved in committees that make decision that are to better our town! If you're not happy about it then run for a position in which you might be able to make decisions as well. There seems to be enough of you on here who have the same opinion that Springfield is such a horrible place, and that you know exactly how to fix it... SO go and try to do just that. FIX whatever you think is so wrong... But there is just one problem with that idea, Springfield has alot of positive things going for it, and alot of good people in this town who want to continue to see it succeed. SO all I can see you do is drive out the business we have, and make our children move away as they grow older so they don't have to listen to negative Nelly's like you!
ReplyDeleteCheck this story out. I feel it is only a matter of time if we keep moving in the direction this town is..that we too will see something of this magnitude.
ReplyDeleteOur town and our school system needs to be run as a corporation not a family business.
http://www.theunionleader.com/article/20111011/NEWS15/710119975
corporation??
ReplyDeleteSCHOOLS RUN LIKE A CORPORATION??? NOOOOOOO!
..... go back to the 1% that is getting overthrown by the Current American Marjority the 99%
the schools ARE run by a corporation The Town of Springfield.
Appearently this corporation is made up of family members, friends, and old school neighbors.
No need for Schools unless you're gonna teach something.
So obviously someone is steeling money here.
