Pitching, big frame lead Cosmos
SOFTBALL
Springfield 12, Hartford 4
WHITE RIVER JUNCTION — The Cosmos picked up right where they left off in last year’s Division II state championship season: with great pitching.
Sophomores Heather Sanborn and Sara Locke combined on a four-hitter and a four-run third inning got the Cosmos out to a 7-0 lead.
Jenna Paul’s triple ignited the big frame against Shelby Yee and Kristin Cook’s two-run double was the big blow.
Sanborn got the win with four innings of work, allowing two hits, walking only one and striking out six on a windy day.
“They (Hartford) are a respectable team,” said Cosmos coach Andy Bladyka. “We played well. We kept the pressure on them and built the lead.”
Paul fnished with two singles, a double and a triple, and Kaylee Haskell (two RBI) and Julia Stein (two runs) had two hits each for Springfield.
Jenna Yee had three of Hartford’s four hits, while the Cosmos collected 11.
Springfield will host Division I Rutland on Friday.
