We grew up across the street from the worst family in town, so bad that at one point other townspeople asked my dad if he would help them run the family out of town. Arguing, screaming, sounds of articles being smashed were weekly occurrences. Dad of course was a drunk; mom was an enabler; they used the behavior of the kids to distract people from the problems of the whole family. The kids were mostly horrible in school. This was back when spanking was permitted, and even that didn't work.

This was also before social services; there was nobody who was authorized to pull any of the kids out of the household-- everything they suffered was "normal." The only family that lost its kids to the authorities was one where an infant dead for three months was discovered concealed in the attic.

We should be grateful that as a society we now understand that kids who display violent behavior have reasons (not necessarily good ones) for such displays, reasons that ought to be investigated and addressed not only for their good, but for society's good as well. As a volunteer for Court Diversion in Springfield for decades, I have met dozens of adults who were glad they went through our program. They had their lives turned around by a publicly-funded program.

We expect our schools to supply the worst of parental defects, but we bridle at giving them the resources-- staff and equipment-- to do it. It does, however, really take a village to raise a child.

  3. takes a village to raise a child- However Chuck, most Parents don't want anyone to say anything to their kids. It's a good way to get some low-brow people to get in your face. Teachers get that a lot. "Little Jimmy would never do that..."

Social Services are overwhelmed and under funded and are increasingly less likely to get involved unless a child is in imminent danger. The Police don't want to get called to Elm for "runner" students. The School's hands are increasingly tied in what they can do. Now it seems we have community backlash against the budget for the schools as if that will fix anything.
