WHITE RIVER JUNCTION —Concern over a child’s safety and frequent visitors at a Chester apartment netted several arrests and $30,000 in illegal drugs, including some found stuffed in children’s clothing, police said.
Chester Police Officer Mark Phelps, a 15-year veteran of the department, said Wednesday that it’s the largest drug bust he’s witnessed in Chester.
The officer said he believed drug dealers are looking for rural locations to conduct drug trafficking.
“I think they’re looking for smaller communities to set up shop where the spotlight isn’t focused on them yet,” Phelps said. “There isn’t the spotlight here like in Rutland County. (Drug pushers) are looking for smaller communities to blend in a little bit easier and not be noticed.”
Ten people arrested in the bust on Tuesday were arraigned Wednesday in criminal court in White River Junction. Several face charges of drug possession, others distribution and one woman faces a charge of cruelty to a child.
Chester Police and federal Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives agents searched the apartment of Eric Hale, 37, and his girlfriend, Kaleena Smith, 29 of 108 Pleasant St. on Tuesday. Police said they confiscated $30,000 in drugs, including 665 bags of heroin worth $20,000, 62.2 grams of crack cocaine, one gram of cocaine worth $6,200, 133 OxyContin pills worth $4,000 and $18,000 in cash.
Hale and Smith were arrested along with six people from New Jersey and two from Vermont who were in the apartment at the time including Henry
Caledron, 22, Yder Castillo, 20 and Jose Sanchez, 21, of Jersey City, N.J.; Xavier Benitez, 29, and Jason Artega, 21, of Union City, N.J.; Miguel Zayas, 26, of Newark, N.J.; Ryan Bartley, 20, of Chester and William Aviles, 35, of Springfield.
Caledron, Castillo, Sanchez, Artega and Zayas have extensive criminal records in New Jersey, according to Deputy State’s Attorney Heidi Remick. Judge Robert Gerety set their bail at $750,000 each. They are being held at Springfield prison. Bartley and Aviles are being held on $15,000 and $50,000 cash bail respectively due to local ties in the community. Each was charged with one count of heroin and crack cocaine trafficking and face up to 30 years in prison and up to $1 million in fines for each charge.
Hale and Smith face different charges in the case. Hale was charged with one count each of heroin and crack cocaine trafficking and narcotics possession, while Smith faces one count each of heroin and cocaine trafficking, narcotics possession and child cruelty.
If convicted, Hale faces up to 65 years in prison and over $6 million in fines while Smith faces 67 years and over $6 million in fines. Due to their ties to the local community, Hale is being held at a lower bail amount, $150,000, while Smith was released on $10,000 unsecured bail.
Chester Police began their investigation after they were informed of “a dramatic increase in foot and vehicle traffic” at Hale and Smith’s apartment, according to Phelps, a Chester police officer. In addition, Chester Police Officer Matt Wilson said he was contacted by the state Department of Children and Families after they received an anonymous tip concerning a child living in the apartment. During the sweep of the apartment, police said they found a large amount of cash in the child’s room stuffed inside the child’s clothing, along with 29
OxyContin pills in a bottle underneath a chair in the child’s room. The child is now in state’s custody.
Finally ! PROGRESS !! in chester............ go figure.
ReplyDeleteSpringfield PD have decided to one-up the Chester PD by ordering all officers to frown at the drug dealers as they watch them lounge around town.
ReplyDeleteI think what carries through here is the close proximity. The select board should be reaching out to chester and sharing what they are doing here to work hand in hand to keep these people moving away from us. For that matter they should be reaching out to BF, Charlestown, and Windsor so that each town can work and share information to push those dealers elsewhere. The point wasnt other towns having the problem but rather it spreading out. This push will work for our towns ONLY if each town pushes the States Attorney to prosecute to the fullest to set the tone.
ReplyDeleteHELLO SELECT BOARD ARE YOU HEARING THIS!!!!
Third or fourth heroin bust in 3 weeks. Every week there is one. Hope Springfield PD doesn't get lax thinking it is over with and they have rid the area cause they haven't. Keep going everyone..we have to be vigilant to push the drugs out of our community.
ReplyDeleteYall just mad cuz we spend ya whole salary on things u cant afford. We out here!
ReplyDelete3 24... where to begin.... 1. you don't have money, you have drug money, huge difference. 2. you don't save, so your not, "rich" though you may think you are 3. you are not intelligent 4. you "spend" foolishly 5. you make the planet a worse place, go away
ReplyDeleteTrash....all of them, trash. Things we can't afford? Dude, you live in SPRINGFIELD, VT. All it means to us is that you couldn't make it in Newark and came here to hide from what you would need to face there. Big and bad in Springfield. So impressive!
ReplyDeletethanks 5 17, I wrote 3 45 and am sick of "thugs" and classless people thinking spfld is their's...c'mon. They sell drugs because they are not smart enough to make it in the real world without pathetically hunting down other nimrod's to sell their drugs too.... note to all people who read this... if you smoke pot or do any drugs you are the problem in this community. Can we all agree that we all want to be successful? I imagine all who read this are saying..yes, who wouldn't want to be successful? Whether it be for your own materialisti self or for the good of your family we want to succeed. These scumbags even... they sell drugs to make "money," well let's take this stand and I challenge all of Springfield to stand up at once. If you are smart and truly want success, stop all drug dealing this second, get on the right path, if you can;t yourself seek help, if we all take a stand to not do illegal things and put the community first this town will turn around. Again, this is a challenge to all... take one month of your life and do "the right thing" and see how this town changes, see how are image changes, this trend wil catch on and the town wel love will succeed. lets try it, please.....
ReplyDeleteI apologize for spelling mistakes as I did this on a cell phone with passion.....
DeleteI hope yhou weren't driving. hate to read about you on facebook.
DeleteWho would we contact in the justice system to be sure they follow through with these bozos? They are poisoning our communties and affecting families and children. It infuriates me that the criminals with "local connections" are given lower bail, especially if they actually moved here after destroying their own communities through partcipating in murder, drug dealing and the like. We don't want them here and they should not be given preferential treatment just because they have found girlfriends willing to put up wth their dysfunction and criminal behavior.
ReplyDeleteI hope the low-life's who deal drugs read this blog and I hope they fall on this page because i intend to ridicule them in every way and I hope all other citizens do as well. It is mind boggling how THEY can live their life's as such loser's and be ok with it? anyone else feel this strongly.... I know if i ever did anything that is less than stellar or the community would think less of me because of the act i followed i would be ashamed, not just because it's embarrassing not to be a contributing factor to a positive community but because in the back of my head i would say...... wow what would my mom think of me right now???? really scum bags who smoke pit and deal drugs, what does your mom think of you when you are doing disgraceful things.... idiots
Deleteyour talking about the selectboard and the over abundant medical industry that seams to be "aquiring" all of the usage and occupation of the newly "aquired" grant monies... right..
Deletesmoke pit must be hi
DeleteI am talking about the people walking up and down main street in Springfield in the middle of the day with obviously less than appropriate attire..... Let's face it, it is obvious by observing who in this town contributes and who does not.... it's harsh but true.... in a town of our size its obvious vs a diverse, large town like Burlington where you can't necessarily make assumptions on looks alone.
ReplyDeleteeverybody not in a S.S. suit is not in proper attire.
Deletedo pigs fly?
Deletepigs do fly.
DeleteThey can be slow burned to produce heat and power a steam engine.
It's called biomass.
1 pig can heat your house for the entire winter. If you have a sow, you'll never need to buy oil or gas again.
