Springfield, Vt. man accused of attempted murderer requests lower bail

White River Junction — A Springfield, Vt. man charged with attempting to murder a man in broad daylight boasted in phone calls from prison that the shooting was only the “beginning” of a plan to exert influence in town, according to recordings played in court.

Terrick Craft, 28, made that statement and others during jailhouse phone calls in which he seemed to assert authority in Springfield, Vt. and threaten violence against anyone who stood in his way.
“This little town, we’re taking over,” Craft said in a recording played by prosecutors in Windsor Superior Court yesterday during a bail hearing. “This was a sample. Any given time, any given place, things can go down. They need to watch it. This is only the beginning. I’m not playing. I’m knocking everyone. That’s the whole purpose. It can get ugly at any place — morning, church, your mother’s birthday. You got to put your foot down.”
The tapes, of calls between Craft and unidentified individuals, were played during a hearing in which Craft’s attorney, Karen DeWolfe, asked a judge to lower his bail and release him from prison.
DeWolfe contested Deputy Windsor County State’s Attorney David Cahill’s efforts to have the recordings admitted as evidence.
Ultimately, Judge Robert Gerety declined to rule on the bail issue yesterday, saying he would soon issue a written decision.
“Mr. Craft shot at someone four to five times. If Mr. Craft gets out, the state has genuine fears that Mr. Craft will finish what he didn’t succeed at the first time,” Cahill said. “These are clearly threatening statements directed at other people.”
But DeWolfe said the recordings provided little context, and did not indicate any criminal intent.
“These tapes are ambiguous at best,” DeWolfe said. “Casual comments in private conversations ... should not be held against him.”
Inmate phone calls are recorded — participants are notified by an automated warning that police will have access to the calls.
Craft, a reputed member of the Bloods gang, has pleaded not guilty to a charge of attempted second-degree murder, which carries a maximum life sentence, and other charges, for allegedly shooting at 31-year-old Nicholas Brown.
According to court documents, Craft pulled a gun on Brown when the two men ran into each other in downtown Springfield, Vt. on a July afternoon. Brown punched Craft in the face and wrestled him to the ground in a choke hold, Brown later told police.
Craft suffered a broken jaw, but he was able to stand up and fire four to five shots. Brown ran off. Police found bullet holes in a nearby building.
Craft turned himself into police, and is being held in prison on $500,000 bail. Authorities have not provided a motive for the alleged confrontation.
DeWolfe has previously noted that the gun in the alleged incident has not been recovered, and the only witness to come forward is the reputed victim.
Craft’s wife, Tracy, briefly took the witness stand yesterday and said she would look after Craft if he were released on bail. Craft has lived in Springfield, Vt. since 2008, she testified.
Several of Craft’s friends and family members sat in the courtroom gallery yesterday — he bade them farewell as he was ushered away by sheriff’s deputies.

Send this POS packing back to whatever rathole he climbed out of (assuming it's far,far away from Vermont), or, while I personally don't feel like having my taxes pay to keep his sorry a&& locked up in Vermont, I'd rather see him rot in our jails then gain his freedom to spread further venom and destruction.
ReplyDeleteNow he will be paroled in Vermont and will be stuck here to terrorize the neighborhood. I moved to Montana from Vermont where his ilk is non-existant
DeleteThank you for posting this since there wasn't any coverage in the local papers.
ReplyDeleteWhat the hell is on your face? Go on back to New Jersey with the rest of Hood rats!

DeleteIs it human?
ReplyDeleteNo, it's not. Humans don't act that way, at least not the ones who should have the priviledge to live free.
DeleteI wonder if we could set up a Charitable Foundation which supplied transportation and relocation expenses, to people such as this identified as coming out of our prison system. The Foundation would work with the judicial system to make sure that its program was consistent with the terms of the parole being set by the parole board. I would envision the parole calling for strict monitory and reporting to probation officers so long as the parolee lived in Vermont or a contiguous State, but ceasing if the parolee established permanent residence at least two States away from Vermont. The Foundation would then arrange for transportation and moving expenses, and possibly the first two months rent in thos States to which the parolee relocated so long as the States were at least three States away and so long as the parolee took his/her family them.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, that would be gilding the lily. Right now, freed prisoners are not allowed to live in Springfield, and of course probation/parole might be part of their terms of release.
DeletePerhaps a more effective solution would be a substance abuse penal system, where all the drugs the inmates desire are provided in unlimited quantities. Prisoners are released when testing drug-free for thirty days. It would be a win-win situation: they feed their addiction without disturbing the public peace, and when they are motivated to clean up, they get the reward they desire most. I can see where a substantial portion of the administrative cost might be funerals for the deceased incarcerated....
Well I understand your desire to fix the system Chuck, I guess my desire is to simply get them out of town. We have enough homegrown problems without these people coming in from New Jersey and Florida.
DeleteWe already have this progressive system in place Chuck Gregory, the prisoners already appear to have all the drugs they desire available while they are in prison. So see we are already way ahead of you liberals. Don't understand all this ballyhoo about a few bullets flying around the town, just some good clean fun.
DeleteSounds like it was self defense. This is obviously a case of racial discrimination. If he were white he would have never been charged but since he is black he has a ridiculous amount of bail set for him that is impossible to meet. Where is Windsor County Deputy State’s Attorney Heidi Remick? His attorney should get in touch with her and work out a cake baking deal. Seems Heidi has a sweet tooth.
ReplyDeleteNonsense, if he were white he would have been charged.
DeleteI hope you're joking about the racial profiling.
DeleteSpoken like a true liberal... geez...
DeletePrevious felony *convictions*? That seems like enough for ridiculous bail to me.
DeleteBlah this wasn't an act in defense. heck no... right before this happened ther were other situations where this same guy was messing with quite a few different people, including a minor. defense my A**
DeleteYou'll be a liberal until one of them breaks into your house one night and terrorizes your family
DeleteThis guy has a long history of arrests and convictions in at least 2 states including aggravated assault, assault with a deadly weapon, assaulting a police officer and arson. Anybody want him as a neighbor?
ReplyDeleteHello Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to the New Springrield VT. We've managed to lower our standards to insure we partake of this so-called Integration that our Democrat "leaders" speak so highly of.
ReplyDeleteAlong with Rutland, Brattleboro, BF, Windsor, Hartford, Barre, Burlington and Winooski. This is not a Springfield only problem.
Deletei think its time to reform the green mtn boys and take out the trash.
ReplyDeleteAgreed! Since the Jersey Rats are "planning" to take over our town..When would the Ol' Boys be available?
ReplyDeleteThe state of VT is a welcome haven for people looking for a free ride. People FLOCK here from all over to leach off from our welfare system and us. HCRS opened and we had a huge influx of mentally challenged people move in. The prison opened and people like Craft and his family showed up. With them came drugs which brought even more welfare recipients. People like me who work hard for our money are forced to pay for these people who decided to make collecting welfare a career. Personally I know there is nothing I can do by myself I have tried. I have voted every year to get the town officials out but the people I am talking about outweigh my vote and they get to stay. "Give a person welfare and they vote democrat every time!"
ReplyDeleteNow, now, this is just good capitalism at work. We have a few nice people who happen to be bad shots trying to provide the established drug lords of Springfield and Chester with some healthy competition. All retail enterprises need an injection of new blood from time to time. Am sure our Police Chief has this all under control, you liberals just need to take some chill pills while the industry sorts things out.
DeleteYeah very interesting Boss Hogg, but isn't it possible that some innocent people might get caught in the crossfire as the insurgent gang related drug dealers and the established drug families in Chester and Springfield go to war either from stray bullets or happening to be in a house when it gets burned down? Its all well and good to talk about just the drug dealers killing off each other, but am not sure that is all that safe. I think I would prefer to just drive the gang related dealers out of Springfield and over to Mt. Holly or somwthing.
DeleteThis guy should be executed for his attitude and everyone like him. He is irredeemable. And ugly too.
