The Smart Meters are coming! The Smart Meters are coming!

Over the past year and a half, Vermont power companies have been busy installing the controversial devices in communities throughout the state while curiously leaving Springfield out... until now.

A Smart Meter installer was spotted out and about the North Springfield Industrial Park Wednesday where Green Mountain Power offices and equipment are located. He told one resident that most electric customers he's encountered so far seemed totally surprised that meter replacements were scheduled for this time. Apparently, the only advance notice Green Mountain Power gave customers was in small print on a glossy postcard which many likely tossed out without reading due to its design resembling a piece of junk mail advertising.

  2. I opted out a month ago. Today GMP came to my house looking for my neighbors house to install his, and left. On Chester Rd in Springfield.

  3. Everyone in favor of stopping the use of smart meters better not be using cell phones or connecting to the Internet with a wireless connection! Talk about being delusional! The most likely cause of this misguided attempt to stop progress and modernize is probably someone has their job or a family member or a friend's at risk. Let's outlaw combustion engines and bring back the use of horse-drawn carriages and buggy whips!

    2. Haha! Typical ((((((Paranoia))))). Unless your meter is asploding because of your Grow Lights for your MJ crop you have nothing to fear. So what if someone figures out that you watch TV(Oprah reruns) all day? You have already identified yourself as jerk for posting nonsense here. What could be worse?

    3. Here at SVN headquarters, RF paranoia knows no bounds. We banished cordless landline phones in 2005 and have never considered wireless internet. The only cell phone is kept in the car and is turned off most of the time, only to be used while on the road when really necessary, such as a sudden emergency. Smart Meters are good for at least one emergency. In case of a serious power shortage, GMP can remotely shut off power to some customers so that others may retain power. But those who elect to keep their old analog meter would still have power no matter what, as long as there is no physical damage to power lines or transformers.

    4. HACKED, grow lights ? No. They are on solar panels..

It is more like the patterns of usage that reveal your location, or vacation. Even if just for target marketing, it is a scam.

    5. Admin...judging by the amount of articles you posted about smart meters that paranoia appears to have taken over your life. Say....is that a smart meter installer crouching in the bushes behind you?

  4. I declined a smart meter, but only until the State of Vermont finishes its study on the matter and gives their verdict. If they determine there is nothing detrimental about them, I'll probably let GMP install one on the house.

  5. We just opted out, too. What about the jobs the smart meter will be eliminating? More people out of work. Think about it.

  6. All opting out does is delay the process for everyone else. It doesn't help anyone. Wipe your ignorance with your paranoia tissue and flush it! Let GMP do what they want with their own property. Other states didn't get an option to decline, but of course you hippies will oppose anything just to do it.
