A Celebration of the Life of Edgar May

More than 150 friends, family and fans of Edgar May gathered poolside today to pay tribute in the recreation center named for him.

Edgar May in Paris, 1968, where for two years he was special assistant to the U.S. Ambassador to France, Sargent Shriver.
The time of remembrance was led by Rabbi Jan Salzman of Burlington. Speakers included Vermont Governor Peter Shumlin, Springfield attorney George Lamb, Congressman Peter Welch, Peggy Lockridge (her sister married Edgar), his nephew Peter Kunin and ending with moving remarks from Edgar's sister, former governor Madeleine Kunin.

  1. Was the building of the Edgar May Health and Recreation Center worth it when you consider that Springfield had to sell out and allow the prison to be built in order for the recreation center promoted by Edgar May, named for Edgar May and that it was funded in return for saddling Springfield with the prison albatross that is destroying the town?

It was absolutely worth it. It is one of the best things that has happened to this town. He was a great man and has given more to the world, this country, our state, this community and yes, even you. Sniveling negativism only breeds more. Lift up your head and do something positive instead of always looking at the bad side. There are problems and we should not look at our community with rose colored glasses, but there is real and good work being done in this town by many people. Recognize the problems, pick one, just one, and set a gaol of making that problem just one small step closer to being solved by something you do over the next month. Then pick another and move on. Stop feeling like a victim and you will not be one.

    1. you've probably never been to an un-used swimming pool that's only use is a pre-requisite for criminal politicians and applying for tax resources.

    2. Odd. The swimming pool is always in use when I am there and I go to the center at least twice a week to exercise. I don't believe that makes it unused.

    4. A gathering mostly of those who think their "somebody" celebrating the life of a politically connected liberal apparatchik who eventually found and used Vermont to feather his own political ambitions. Edgar and his sister are just two of the problems Vermont experienced over the past decades and their liberal ways have economically neutered the state. But they were able to "walk on the backs of Vermonters" and thus appear larger/taller than they truly are/were. It's worth noting that neither of them remained in Vermont - either during the cold months or during the economically hard times (which closely followed on the heals of Kunin's destructive governance). Both migrated to warmer and/or greener (monied) pastures as they pleased, leaving the average Vermonter to pay the bills and reap the economic carnage left in their wake. A life to be celebrated? More likely to be footnoted.
