The life of Edgar May, Pulitzer Prize winning journalist and Vermont State Senator, was celebrated January 6 at the Edgar May Health & Recreation Center in Springfield, VT. This video is from a Flip MinoHD camera near the podium; the audio is from the camera microphone (it has a low volume). Speakers included Rabbi Jan Salzman; Vermont Governor Peter Shumlin; Congressman Peter Welch; George Lamb; Maggie "Peggy" Lockridge (sister of Louise Breason May); Peter Kunin; and Governor Madeleine May Kunin (Edgar's sister). The video ends during the last moments of the ceremony, cut off when the camera became full. The event was held at the poolside of the Center and live-streamed by Big Heavy World. We'll post the recording of the live stream as soon as it's available.
Big Heavy World is a non-profit Vermont corporation out of Burlington that relies on volunteers to to do audio and video recording work, normally only music events. They've been promoting and archiving the Burlington music scene since 1996 and are supported in great part by gifts from individuals, foundations, businesses, and sales of Vermont-made music recordings. Consider mailing them a contribution in memory of Edgar May. Send to: BHW/VMLS, P.O. Box 428, Burlington, VT 05402-0428. Or you can make a donation online by going to http://bigheavyworld.com/support.php
Big Heavy World has worked with volunteer crew from most local high schools, colleges, and alternative schools, a bunch of out-of-state colleges, Linking Learning to Life, Spectrum Youth & Family Services, the Community Justice Center, the Vermont Division for the Blind & Visually Impaired, and other community groups that like to discover fun and productive places to point their kidz.
High school juniors and seniors, students outside the normal school system, adults with an interest in music, and college students can connect any time to get involved - projects range from street teaming to record label distribution, shows, photography, the music library, pretty much anything relating to music in Vermont.
Their internship program allows a greater level of freedom and creativity than one might expect, but also demands a high level of responsibility and dedication to each mission. As a supervised work experience for academic credit, Big Heavy World internships guarantee personal and professional development.
