Week of FUNraising at Friendly's

Friendly's Restaurant has sponsored the Springfield Wrestling Team and you can be part of the fun. You can even smack one of the coaches in the face!

Pick up a voucher at Shaw's in the Plaza, visit Friendly's (in the Springfield Shopping Plaza) any time during the week of January 6-12 and turn in the voucher with your check. Friendly's will donate 20% of your bill to the team.

The team will be in Friendly's on Monday night, January 7th from 6-8pm raffling off a special gift-pack of items donated by the HB Heating Solar Store -- tickets are just $1 each or 6 for $5 -- to a luck winner who buys a ticket that night. Folks who don't win the door prize will be entered into the monthly drawing of many other gift certificates from local restaurants and shops.

Come back to Friendly's on Wednesday night, January 9th, between 6-8pm for a once-in-a-lifetime chance to smack one of our coaches in the face...with a cream pie, that is! For just $1 each, you can buy a cream-filled pie tin and lob it at Coach Floyd Buck, Coach Donnie Beebe, or possibly one of our rugged wrestlers. Help us send our qualifying wrestlers to the National Tournament of Champions on Columbus, OH in April! Learn more from Team Manager Kelly Stettner at (802) 885-1533 or k.stettner101@gmail.com.

Thanks so much for posting this! We hope to have a LOT of pie-throwers on Wednesday night. How can resist chucking a pie at someone?? Although I think it's a paper plate with whipped cream, not a pie "tin". That might hurt. ;-)

    1. Too bad HB is involved, maybe more people would help out.

All I need to do is look at my service bill and not want to help

    2. Hey Dick, HB donated to the cause. If you aren't happy with them go somewhere else. Johnson and Dix, Irving, BART, Cota and Cota etc......just because they actually see value in helping kids out doesn't mean the team should suffer. I was part of the team a few years ago and the politics of this town were always against them trying to help the kids out. All they needed was the Cosmos name and some backing with the school and they were set. No money was asked for or needed. We had singlets, mats and parents paid for transportation and tournaments. For some reason the school board wouldn't support them and we had to start at square one again. It made me remember why this town is falling apart.
Now that Kelly Stettner is at the helm the team is growing with leaps and bounds. She has piloted fundraising efforts, they are going to have a tournament in Springfield this year and the team is growing again. For someone to come and say that because HB supports them you wouldn't want to "help out" is selfish and a really cowardly.

Tim, thanks for the kudos...it's been quite a road, hasn't it? We have many people to thank as the team moves forward, too many to list here. I do hope the previous poster sees that this is about the dedication of these young wrestlers, not about who is donating prizes to the cause.

    5. Since coach Scweitzer (sp) passed away the team did as well. Thankfully Kelly and other parents have seen the impact it makes on wrestlers and have pushed to get it up and going again. I am hoping that it will be offered in high school soon.
Both of my sons wrestled for Springfield since third grade and did very well at it. The issue at the time was after 8th grade, wrestlers need to be sponsored by a high school, team. Both of my sons had to go to Bellows Falls to continue on with their wrestling career. After the first year with them one of my sons ended up getting hurt and had kept getting concussions due to other sports injuries from football and baseball. This year they both decided to dedicate their time to working out to be in shape for football. It was hard for me but I understood that they needed a break and wanting to try a different avenue.
Wrestling is a great sport that challenges people not only physically but mentally as well. There are no time outs, no substitutes and no place to hide. It's not for everyone! It boosts confidence, fitness and social skills. Both of my sons were very shy when they first started wrestling now if you know them, you'd think I was lying.

    7. @ 9:02 .... you get your face ready ...

I'll be there with a I "heart" HB fuels shirt...

Can't wait to throw pies at you to release my inner tension for seeing my grandmother ripped off by local oil thieves.

    8. Another guy that helped us a lot before the program was dropped was Coach Saypack, he coached all three years I wrestled and I found out later Coach Schwietizer want him to keep it going but he wasn't getting paid and it took a lot of time. We won our the Div II championship with those coaches and rode home in a ice cold van listen to them laugh all the way. Donny and Floyd were both on those teams and I would love to help if I was still in the area.

To Anonymous 10:00AM and 10:03AM...you have issues that need to be taken up with HB and not with the wrestling team. Switch your grandmother over to some other company, take HB to court, do what you need to, but please be civil on this community forum and realize what kind of example you're setting. Do you also have issues with Bromley Sun Lodge, Hole in the Hill Restaurant, Black River Used Books, Jake's Market, 56 Main Restaurant, Black Rock Steak House, Young's Furniture, McDonald's, and the dozen other companies whose owners have generously donated to our team's efforts?

I am sorry your grandmother's situation has you so upset, but I sincerely hope you can keep your anger and frustration in perspective.

  2. Good cause. What's the door prize? The article doesn't say.

  3. Hitting Floyd Buck in the face with a cream pie is worth a dollar!

Floyd is more than willing to take some pie in the face for the team...he and Donnie Beebe have been the guiding light and dynamic duo bringing our humble group of wrestlers through some roadblocks and challenges, helping so many of these kids (my daughter included) learn so much about themselves and really shine.

HB is one of MANY businesses in town that has donated goods, services, money, or gift certificates to the wrestling team. We asked and business owners are happy to help. We're grateful for the donations! One of the door prizes tomorrow night is a bag of goodies from HB's solar store...a nifty variety of items. Don't want to come for the raffle? Pick up a voucher at Shaw's and eat at Friendly's this week; the restaurant will donate 20% of your bill to the team.

Wednesday night is the pie-throwing...our coaches and a wrestler or two will step up and take some whipped cream in the face for your kind donation of a dollar per throw. :-)

Folks -- there's a time and place for slinging insults. This ain't it. There are people in town trying to improve things and create healthy opportunities for young people, such as wrestling. If you have an issue with a company in town, I highly recommend you take it up with their managment. I know the folks posting here would want to see young people in this town doing something constructive the improves their health, self-esteem, and chances for college scholarships. No one involved in running this team is an employee of HB, as if that should even matter.

If you are interested in HELPING our young wrestlers earn their way to National Competition in April, please come on Wednesday night to toss a pie at a COACH or a WRESTLER. If all you are interested in is being cruel and destructive, please keep it at home, as those qualities are not what we're trying to promote in our team.
