The Board will choose between Zach McLaughlin, assistant superintendent for curriculum, instruction and assessment, and Union Street Elementary School Principal Martha Potter.
The announcement will be made near the end of the February 4th School Board meeting scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Springfield High School library.

The Springfield School Board will announce the new district superintendent next Monday after meeting with the top two candidates Wednesday night in executive session for roughly three hours. School Board Chairman Scott Adnams said the directors have selected the next Springfield superintendent after a round of interviews earlier this week, but told the Eagle Times they will not release the name at this time because they are still negotiating a contract with their selection. “We will vote on that Monday night, so we’re not going to release any information before Monday night,” Adnams said. The board will choose between Zach McLaughlin, assistant assistant superintendent for curriculum, instruction & assessment, and Union Street Elementary School Principal Martha Potter, both of whom have applied for the superintendent position. McLaughlin and Potter were the district’s two internal candidates, a move the board hopes will to develop new leaders from within their system. Using this strategy, the board hopes the candidates are better known by the staff and community and are familiar with the strengths and challenges of the district.
disqualify BOTH OF THEM
ReplyDeleteWhat ???
Deleteagain ?
what it's not like it's Groundhog's day after all.
another over blown over dramatized and OVER FUNDED
non functional armpit of a hair
Abby- What are you talking about?
DeleteI still say they hire that guy that was in town a few weeks ago with the sign that read will work for food. At least he needed a job
ReplyDeleteUmmmm, NO!!!! We need some fresh ideas. Do a nation-wide search. Oh, that's right...who the hell wants to come here. My bad LOL
ReplyDeleteAnother thing to consider was the cost of a nation-wide search. At a recent meeting it was discussed and would have been added to the budget if approved. The board didn't decide at that meeting and the subject didn't come up again.
Deletethe nationwide search was only 6k considering the budget is 30 million I think that is a drop in the bucket I would be willing to pay
DeleteUnfortunately the board is in the mode of cutting things from the budget to get a vote, not adding anything, even a nation wide search process. Some people would vote to pay it, sure, but too many people only see the bottom line and immediately say the cost is too high, so vote NO. From the last few years of watching the budget process, this seems to be the mind set of the board - cut enough to get the budget passed and don't worry where the cuts go as long as people pass the budget. There is very little long-term consideration when preparing a budget from what I can see. From a common person perspective, there are a lot of things that can and should be cut from the budget, but most likely never will be, because some administrator says these line items are needed to "keep up with educational excellence" so the board doesn't look too closely. Maybe a new super will be different. Guess only time will tell the story.
DeleteSo did anyone go this this meet and greet session of board meeting? Did any parents come out and voice that they didn't want either one? Im sure not. Here we go again. The only time the board listens is when dozens of parents come out or threaten a lawsuit and that's it. I also heard nobody is running for school board against Janet or Scott so yet again you get what you deserve I guess. Too much welfare, non-tax paying residents to the dwindling tax payers.
ReplyDeleteThe two members who are up for election are Jeanice and Ken, not Scott.
Deletethe two members whose terms end are Jeanice and Ken, not Scott.
DeleteSpringfield schools will be screwed for another 5 years. This is absolutely idiotic. It is like asking Charlie Manson to help out in fighting crime. Springfield can not be fixed from within. It is going to take a competent outsider to turn away from the course headed into the rocks. Time to riot! The students deserve more than just another sellout.
ReplyDeleteYour idiotic! Hes not from Springfield! He knows what needs to happen to move forward. People like you need to move out of Spfld cus you just bring the town down when ever something good comes along.
DeleteThese candidates weren't sell outs and they know what direction the schools need to go in. With Frank gone they can finally move ahead and address things instead of being muzzled by someone who prefers to hide his head in the sand. Both could do to the job well, especially if the board finds the courage to not reappoint the current school board chair who seems to forget that the district's priority must be the children.
ReplyDeleteZach McLaughlin's profile on the Springfield School District's website reads as follows: "I am a native Mainer who grew up with two high school educators for parents. My mom taught biology, and my dad was a special educator. My career has seen me working in schools in Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Missouri, China, South Africa, and, now, Vermont. I feel that each school has given me a valuable insight into what good education can be."

A man with such mediocre powers of expression and such a pedestrian resume of, as he puts it, "working in schools..." is exactly the kind of candidate that would immediately appeal to the ineptocrats comprising the school board. This guy is not superintendent timber, particularly for a system in need of a wholesale overhaul.
Amen to that!
DeleteMcLaughlin's CV clearly shows no connection to academic and trade skills necessary to earn a livelihood in the 21st century. Best be knows how to do is feast off the public teat.
We need a superintendent with real word experience, proven leadership, and a commitment to excellence in education. Excellence that encourages families to move to Springfield so their children have a real shot at tier one Universities, and lucrative careers.
By he way, isn't McLaughlin the administrator that has a laughable degree in Women's Studies? WTF could he possibly comprehend about earning a living by working for a profit?
Oh my... That's terrible. He will be the next super, so don't be surprised.
DeleteWake Up! It's Groundhog Day in Springfield. Bill Murray would be proud as , once again, nothing is going to change for the better in Springfield. New day, same old stuff.
ReplyDeleteHold on to your socks! You are in for a bit of a surprize.
ReplyDeleteMaybe the Towne should institute the draft.
ReplyDeleteHere is what is going to happen.....the board is going to say that neither is right for the job so they will keep Dr Frank.
ReplyDeleteThey should hire someone from Crank Robbins
ReplyDeletethe thing is both the candidates were/are administrators while the district was/is in troubled/failing status with the state, the district needs to find outside people with new ideas, both candidates couldn't help bring the district back on course before, how are they gonna do it now,oh yeah the person from the state is gonna tell them how to do it,maybe we should hire that person to be the new superintendent, maybe there should be a petition to out the whole school board,1 more question if our budget's are so tight every year how come we freeze the budget and end up with $200.000-$300.000 surplus for the last few years.i think it's time to start cleaning out the central office and hiring new people with new ideas and for less money, another thing i heard not sure if it's true or not, is that all the money the administration at park street saves from the budget, they get a percentage of that money for a bonus,on top of their $100.000 plus salaries.
ReplyDeleteclose te schools and start over
DeleteWasn't perotti an outside person? How did that work out? Just because they are outside of the district doesn't make them good.
Deletehe should of been gone a long time ago,but our school board, doesn't care what the taxpayers think, that's why the whole school board has to go,get people in there that listen
DeleteAgain, it's great you want them gone but once again two incumbents are running unopossed. It is fairly clear people are NOT that upset with the school board. They are doing a good enough job to keep getting elected.
DeleteWhile I agree that Perotti should have been gone a long time ago, the only way to get him out of here was to buy out his contract. The district has already bought out enough high school principal contracts, so spending that much to get rid of him may not have been in the best interests of the district. On the other hand, how much has he cost the district? I'd say it's about a draw when it comes to finances.
DeleteI question whether the board has the competency to attract and hire a successful candidate. Aren't several members, particularly Garfield, responsible for 4 or 5 short term superintendents that have left under less then positive tenures? Have to ask yourself, what SUCCESSFUL, career professional would accept a position governed by the same stooges that are the root cause for the system's ongoing failures? A system so awful, no one wants to even be connected to it by running for a board seat.
ReplyDeleteGood points, but useless since two incumbents are running unopossed.
DeleteAlthough I am not a fan of Jeannice Garfield, there have only been two superintendents since Joe Silver. Rose Rooth and Frank Perotti.
Deletei say until the board starts listening to the taxpayers, vote NO to the budget, the kids will still get their education and maybe the administrators won't get their big percentage raises and the board will know people have had enough of their games
ReplyDeleteHow does the budget make the changes you are calling for here? Does less money = more attention to grifted children? Does less money = higher necap scores?
DeleteDoes voting NO on the budget change the school leadership?
don't vote for them
ReplyDeleteIs C.C. available as a write-in candidate?
ReplyDeleteTo allow the buffoons at the helm to continue on is the classic definition of insanity.
The district would need therapy if Springfielders had to listen to CC's never-ending monologues. While his posts seem long they are actually abridged versions of when he has a live audience.
Deletehow about the school board wanting to buy the house on union street,$94.000 to buy it,then tear it down and spend money to build a parking lot,$217.000 for the whole project, how many spaces are they gonna get on that house site, according to the director of physical plant, not many, them the board says well at least we'll own the property and get rid of the house, didn't realize its the school district job to pay to clean this town up,just wasting more money
ReplyDeleteIt's not the school districts job, it's the select boards, but they can't get out of their own way.
DeleteI applaud the idea of buying the house.
It's ashame that town government didn't think of it first.
I think the idea arose from the fact that its a home rented out to known drug dealers....chew on that.
DeleteZM is another lightweight poser who is incapable of leading a system that is in deep trouble. In addition to the flimsy nature of his profile that was noted above, check out the picture that is featured on his twitter account:
ReplyDeletehttp://twitter.com/VermontZach
Long hair, sunglasses...a real cool dude, eh? So what's the message there? He's still a boy seeking the affirmation and adoration of his teeny bopper charges.
This guy lacks the presence to command the respect of students, much less their parents, and the staff and faculty. If the board selects him, get ready for a real soup sandwich of a school system!
"Soup Sandwich" really, must you.
DeleteSee the problem with these forums is that idiots like you Anonymous 9:44 can say what ever they want and spread these words that no one respects him etc. Ive worked with him for a number of years (coming from an outside organization in Spfld) he has done great things for Spfld and its school system.
DeleteIt's almost Tuesday who "won"
ReplyDeleteZach
DeleteThat sucks
DeleteNote: if you vote No, admin salaries won't be the items that are cut, it will be important resources from your child's classrooms. Old computers won't be replaced, new books cant be purchased, think before you act, you think you know what the results will be if you say no but it may not be true. Speak to the school board at a meeting that you want salaries cut, then they will hear you and at least they will know what we are thinking (if they act upon it is a different question) but voting No will only take away from classroom resources, again, think before you act. People move to towns because of schools, by taking away from classrooms how are we going to attract anybody.... Cue the scum bags pretending that they can fight what I am saying but we know this is correct so do yourself a favor and don't listen to the comments below this.
ReplyDeleteOnce again, speaking without knowing the facts. Salaries are contractual, the board can not do anything with them once they are signed. If they do, an unfair labor practice can be filed with the state and federal labor boards. Talk about a waste of money, the only ones who win are the lawyers and the salaries will stay the same. Voting no will hurt the students and no one else.
ReplyDeletepeople move to towns for the schools? i thought it might be because of JOBS and low taxes.
ReplyDeleteOnly younger marrieds with children who care about their children's education.
DeleteI moved out of Springfield because of the schools.
DeleteBusinesses move to towns for the good schools and other indicators of good government-- recreation, social organizations, etc. People then move to town for the jobs.
DeleteChuck, sounds like you are talking economic development, too bad this town doesn't believe in it.
DeleteThe job creation is associated with post-secondary institutions. That is why it is critical that we lure a real post-secondary institution into Springfield -- that should be our primary if not our sole economic development focus right now. If you look where economic development is booming (except for areas being decimated by the fracking industry) its all clustered around post-secondary institutions. The more of these an area has the greater the economic activity.
Deleteso you relocate for a school and then look for a job? that doesnt sound very smart.
ReplyDeletedoes anything you have to say sound smart ?
Deletesmart = relocating out of Springfield for any damn reason you choose, there are hundreds.
Blaim your town councils and not Chuck or Anonymous.
