SPRINGFIELD — They spread the floor, find the open man, gang rebound and share the ball. Burr and Burton Academy did all those things and did them well Thursday night in a 74-47 win over Springfield in a Division II game at Dressel Gym.
“We practice all those things,” said Burr and Burton coach Dave Shehadi. And it looked it as the Bulldogs raced out to a 39-22 lead at the half and coasted in with the win.
Springfield had neither the height or the depth to match up with the Bulldogs. “We can go eight and nine deep without hurting ourselves too much,” said Shehadi.
The win was the fifth straight for the Bulldogs who have a 13-2 mark. The tough season continues for Springfield which has lost nine straight and is 4-12 on the year.
“They have a good game plan and were aggressive on defense,” said Springfield coach Pete Peck. “They really see the floor and certainly had a rebounding edge. They are a top four caliber team.”
Peck was also pleased with the coach’s sophomore son, Joey Shehadi, who had four 3s in the first half. “One of those was 6 feet back,” added Peck.”
Springfield stayed with the Bulldogs early trailing just 16-11 after one. However, Burr and Burton went on a 9-2 run to start the second quarter to take control of the game.
Joey Shehadi, had two 3s in each of the first two periods.
“We played two good halves tonight,” said Coach Shehadi. “Springfield is always a scrappy team and always well coached. I was scared about this one.”
Ten different Bulldogs got into the scoring column paced by Joey Shehadi and Jake Stalcup with 14. Wes Meunch added 12.
The Bulldogs had a huge edge from the foul line where they were 16-of-23. Springfield was 3-of-7.
The only double digit scorer for the Cosmos was Mike Muther with 11. Devin Brady added nine.
Both teams play Monday. Springfield goes to Mill River and Burr and Burton treks to Windsor.
Before the game it was announced that the Burr and Burr-Springfield girls game scheduled for tonight in Springfield had been postponed. Springfield Athletic Director Joe Brown was scrambling around trying to find a makeup date.
