Tractor-trailer crash on I-91 slows traffic
Staff Report | March 19,2013
Rutland Herald
SPRINGFIELD- A tractor-trailer crash has slowed traffic on Interstate 91.
The State Police are reporting a jack-knifed big rig that is blocking one of the two northbound lanes. Traffic is slowed and drivers should expect delays as they drive north.
Go mike.
ReplyDeleteGo Hillside!
ReplyDeletewell if they hadn't closed the rest areas for the truckers to park safely during the winter months this wouldn't happen all the friggin time
ReplyDeleteNice try, the driver had multiple oppourtunities to get off the interstate to take a break. The weather sucked, the road crews couldn't keep up.
DeleteAs someone who drives that road every day, I can tell you for sure, the DOT crew responsible for that stretch NEVER KEEPS UP!
Delete.....but they're not quite as bad as the next crew southbound out of Rockingham who are TOTAL incompetants.
DeleteI'm sure someone will find the SFD negligent for this too.
Delete1:30 of course, it goes without saying that the FD should have been quicker to respond to the truck as it was jack knifing, if it did, this wouldn't have happened.
DeleteIn the name of "efficient government," during the Douglas years, they reduced salting the roads by 40%. Not the man-hours, just the amount of salt. We shouldn't be talking about the road crews being incompetent when in the name of lowering taxes, the government increases the hazard on the road.
ReplyDeleteI went through the trouble of figuring what percentage of my taxes paid for the amount of salt in the state budget and how much more I'd have to pay to have every driver in Vermont on roads that were as safe as possible.
It came out that I would have to pay $195.
I once bought a pair of cowboy boots for $340. They were middling quality. For somewhat more than the price of just one of those boots, I could have been part of the team that made the roads safe for all, but no, Jim Douglas thought otherwise.
Chucky, you have cowboy boots? I didn't know Birkenstock made boots. If you want to make the roads safer for us you'd back your protesters off the curb so we don't have to move to the middle of the road. It's tough enough to read those three signs as we drive by.
DeleteAnother issue with salt that gets over look is that can attract animals such as Moose and Deer to the road, in addition salt can get into smaller animals (such as dogs) paws and causing injury. And, according to my brother whom is a DPW Engineer in the Adirondacks salt gives drivers a false sense of security. He seems to think slowing down or avoiding driving in slippery conditions make the most sense. Oh yeah he also mentions that they work to keep the roads open for Emergency Vehicles during storms not the guy running to pick up a six pack.
I guess then if the government says we are using less salt then they are saying stay home, stay off the roads and you will be safe.
Charlie, you forget something ,the "government" that you want so much more of all the time to protect us as you call it seems to be at fault.
DeleteWe are the government, did you forget?
If he had wanted to take a break, he had just passed the Springfield exit where there is a great place for the truckers to rest. My guess is, Texans don't drive in snow all that often and this is the result.
ReplyDeleteMaybe that's where he was going....but he was northbound just south of Exit 7. So he hadn't reached the truck stop yet.
DeleteChuck, will you give it a rest already. The use of salt has a profound, negative impact. It deteriorates concrete bridges. Corrodes rebar. Fouls runoff water. Kills plant life. And, destroys vehicles long before they wear out. Many Western states have abandoned salt use altogether. A simple solution is, slow the hell down.
ReplyDeleteA well-maintained road in winter is 75% as safe as it is in summer. While salt indeed has profound negative impacts, it does make roads safer. And real men don't slow down. They also wear cowboy boots, sometimes so they can be as tall as or taller than the bikini-clad beauties on either arm.
ReplyDeleteLil mike the first post was for you dad , Your mom showed me the WCAX vid,Now I want friends with you. Kewl
ReplyDeleteHey dude.....you're not talking on the telephone.
DeleteMany and I mean MANY can NOT stay home in a storm as they have to work and if they try not to are told "you live in Vermont, this is expected, and you are expected in". Now personally, I will drive slow and be careful when it is feasible to pass but no job is worth my life, it means more to my family. Many can not be as bold to say this. They are between a rock and a hard place and have to drive those roads.
