Family Center seeks new home

The Springfield Family Center board of directors has made the decision to place their facility, White Acres at 365 Summer Street, on the market for sale.

Dear Friends, Supporters and Community Members,

After much discussion and consideration, the Springfield Family Center Board of Directors has made the decision to place our facility, White Acres at 365 Summer Street, on the market for sale.

There are many factors that go into this decision, and it does not come lightly.

Economic times have remained difficult for our country, and our community is no different. The services demanded of the Springfield Family Center in light of these conditions continue to grow. The facility is large, beyond our needs, efforts to rent additional space have turned up empty and we are looking at the decision from a long-term sustainability perspective.

We want to be clear that the Springfield Family Center has no intentions of ceasing to provide the programs and services that we have been providing the residents of Springfield for the past 42 years. If the property is sold, we will be seeking an alternative location to ensure that the same services we provide today would continue to be provided.

We appreciate the continued support and generosity of our neighbors and hope that everyone is able to understand our reasons and will continue to support us as we work through any transitions moving forward. Simply, we feel we are putting far too much into building operation and upkeep, and feel funds could be better utilized to help us address the continually growing needs of our community.

As any changes occur it is important to us that we keep the community included in our plans.

For the Board of Directors,

Stephanie Gibson
Executive Director

  1. Ok here's an idea. When you have no money and rely on volunteers to help you make it then you simply cannot afford a new place.
That is the issue these days, thinking with their eyes and it their bank accounts.

  2. Well since the fantastic renewal of the 1 building space intown that robbed the rest of the many commercial spaces intown of their tenants this is what happens. The hospital moved the tenant in this building so without an over abundance of businesses who are looking to open somewhere. you end up with this happening. Welcome to springfield.

  3. The family center needs a nicer and more centrally located spot. They provide a service to many. Speaking as a person who donates to them...they need a different space.

    1. Why don't you donate your house?

    2. I would if I owned it and did not still have a mortgage. Thanks for trying to offer it out.

    3. What an idiotic reply to 9:09. That person was just expressing an opinion and 10:08 has to bash it as usual.

Let's see now. Demand continues to increase, BUT the facility is too large, SO they've sought ADDITIONAL SPACE yet not succeeded. What the...?

    1. It's an oxymoron, like government intelligence.

  5. @9:09 --- I think she meant they have tried to rent out additional space to other businesses but have been unable to.

  6. I doubt there are may buyers for this building at $575,000. With the need for affordable housing, drug and alcohol treatment and many other social services, shouldn't there be a way to make use of any empty space in the existing building? Although winter is now past, there continues to be no warming shelter in Vermont between Brattleboro and White River, and there are many, many homeless and semi-homeless in Springfield. Given the current state of affairs in this community, "downsizing" doesn't seem to be what should be happening with the Family Center.
