Branding: More than a tagline and logo

Nike has its Swoosh. Wal-Mart has its asterisk. And then there's Springfield, Vermont.

  1. Anyone know whether our tax dollar were used to pay for this logo consulting and if so, how much it cost?

    1. Private fundraising covered the $10,000 cost of the “community branding”. Most of the money contributed came from local businesses.

  2. "Carol Whitehall of Springfield on the Move echoed the sentiment that going through branding and a market analysis won’t guarantee success." Can we get a big Homer Simpson "Doh!" please? Yet there she is promoting new logos and mottos as a path to success for an economically challenged town. "Branding" is the latest way for resourceful consultants to take advantage of failing towns. .

People aware of their straitened circumstances will grasp at possibilities to improve their lot. It is hardly surprising that businesses and individuals who are concerned about Springfield's situation would donate the money needed for the rebranding effort.

It is possible that the work will produce a change in consciousness-- sort of like the "school spirit" drives in our high school days. We still are living quite a bit under the old factory town mentality, waiting for our superiors to tell us what to do next. Fortunately, the young adults who are coming here with their children seem to be largely free of this closed mindset, and "re-branding" might be just the influence they need to take the reins.

  5. How long is Springfield going to milk the Simpsons? It was one night and it was years ago.

I don't think Springfield is milking the Simpsons. The statues are now basically orphans living in a family that doesn't want them. It would be embarrassing to get rid of them, but it's also a reminder of how we earned them. People have mixed feelings about what they represent.
