Published May 28, 2013 in the Rutland Herald Colonels beat Springfield in splendid mound duel SOFTBALL Brattleboro 12, Springfield 0 (8 innings) BRATTLEBORO – Bailey Paige’s bases-loaded single in the eighth inning delivered a 1-0 victory for Brattleboro over Springfield in a doozy of a Memorial Day Marble Valley League softball game on Monday. That was only the fourth hit of a splendid pitchers’ duel between Brattleboro’s Kayla Wood and Springfield’s Heather Sanborn. Each had a seven-inning one-hitter, with Wood striking out 15 and Sanborn 11. Sanborn had only two walks while Wood did not walk any. Springfield fell to 6-8 while Brattleboro is 11-2-1. “It was a tough way to lose and with my team in upheaval, it’s a tough time of year to be revamping your defense,” said Springfield coach Andy Bladyka, whose team recently lost two players for disciplinary reasons. Rissa Smith started the winning rally with a walk and Maddy Derosia, trying to move the runner into scoring position, saw her bunt past the pitcher end up as a base hit. Alyssa Bezanson then loaded the bases when she bunted and an attempt to cut down the lead runner at third base failed. That led to Paige’s game-winning hit. The Cosmos had a chance to go ahead in the seventh inning of a then-scoreless game as KK Haskell hit a one-out single to break up the no-hitter of Wood, who started the game by retiring the first 14 batters. Springfield wound up with runners at second and third with one out but Brattleboro catcher Daisy Girouz made a diving catch of a popped-up bunt in foul ground and then Wood struck out the last batter to end the threat. Springfield will host Rutland High School Tuesday at 7 p.m.
