Published May 29, 2013 in the Rutland Herald Mill River wins wild affair BASEBALL Mill River 11, Springfield 5 SPRINGFIELD — With the end of the season in sight and the baseball pitch count a fact, it makes for some tough decisions for coaches. Mill River skipper Gary MacDonald made a choice that could have cost him. With his team up 4-0 and Ryan Darling working on a no-hitter, MacDonald pulled him after five innings. “I was trying to get him out of there under the 75-pitch mark so he can go Friday,” said MacDonald, whose team has Fair Haven today and Friday. Ben Upton came on in relief and four walks and an error later, Jonas Hamilton took the mound. He gave up a two-run double to Cody Vandenburgh and Springfield led 5-4. The Cosmos were equally generous in the top of the seventh and the Minutemen plated seven runs courtesy of four walks and singles by Darling and Mark Doiron as well as a bases-loaded double by Pat Mumford. Now comes another decision. Hamilton gets one out in the seventh but reaches 24 pitches so MacDonald had to pull him so he is available to start today. But Pat Fiske comes on to close it out. Eddy Shambo started for Springfield and pitched well. Brighton Fontaine took the loss. Dan Blanchard had a pair of hits and Upton a two-run double for the 7-7 Minutemen
