Crash near Holiday Inn Express sends four to hospital

Springfield Police Cpl. Walter Morancy said Thursday that none of the injuries suffered by the four — all passengers in the two vehicles — appeared to be life-threatening. Morancy said a vehicle driven by Rena Kingsbury, 38, of Arlington, and a van driven by Phillip O’Connor, 43, of Springfield, collided as O’Connor made a left turn into the Holiday Inn Express. Both drivers told Morancy their views were obscured by a tractor-trailer at the intersection, getting ready to turn into the Blue Canoe truck stop. Morancy said that a passenger in Kingsbury’s car hit her head on the windshield. The other injured people were passengers in the van, which overturned after it was hit by Kingsbury’s car, Morancy said. Those people got hurt by falling on top of each other, he said. The corporal said he didn’t have the names of those people taken to the hospital. Morancy said there have been several accidents at the intersection of Routes 11 and 5, including a fatal accident involving a motorcyclist. “The truck stop is very busy and traffic is only increasing,” he said, adding that many motorists come off Interstate 91, which is a short distance away, at a relatively high rate of speed. Morancy said the people in the van were initially trapped because the van was on its side, but were able to get out by the rear window.
