SOM “Take a Seat In Springfield Auction” Raises Capital Submitted by VT Journal on Tue, 07/23/2013 - 2:21pm By BY GLORIA DUFIELD The Shopper SPRINGFIELD, VT -The Take a Seat in Springfield auction last Friday was successful in raising funds for the continuing revitalization of downtown Springfield. The Springfield on the Move (SOM) event was made possible through generous donations of resources and funding by many local businesses including the Hartness House Inn, American Eagle Auctioneering, David Foster - LoamPLUS, Dr. Christopher Fauver, DDS, Springfield Printing, and many more. Prior to auction start, Mary Perry and Marie Gelineau, event co-chairs, thanked the nearly 100 volunteers that were involved in staging the event including those that donated the chairs, the artists who decorated them, local businesses and SOM committee members who they acknowledged by name. Carol Lighthall, SOM Executive Director, shared news with attendees of current and upcoming events and projects including Market Madness in September and the painting project for the Odd Fellows building on Main Street, which would be underway soon. She also mentioned that John Lashua is taking orders for Springfield Pride volunteer shirts with the money going toward smaller revitalization projects. Mark Blanchard, current SOM president, and Tom Browe, past president, served as MCs for the evening. The event started with a happy hour and delicious hors d’oeuvres compliment of the Hartness House as attendees previewed the 69 chairs, stools, benches, and tables that would be up for auction starting at 6:30 p.m. A silent auction was also an active area in which 19 area businesses had donated prizes including the Springfield Fence Company, Black River Produce, Springfield Pharmacy, SNAP Fitness, Springfield Village Pizza, Heritage Deli, Castle Hill Spa & Resort, Von Bargen’s, Dan O’Donnell, Springfield Coop and more. In addition, attendees could purchase tickets for a 50/50 raffle and jewelry and clothing from pop up vendor, Jessica Elizabeth. More than 60 people crowded the auction room at the Hartness House with paper auction paddles ready to bid. Winning bids throughout the evening ranged from $20 to $305. Angela Kelly’s 05156 chair in green and white and decorated with historical Springfield photos including on the seat cushion’s underside resulted in fierce but good natured bidding with the winning bid at $180. Auctioneer John Hall kept the bidding moving with humor as dedicated volunteers moved the chairs from the viewing room to the auction area. Tom Browe encouraged bidders with inventive historical lineages for select chairs while artist and volunteer, Abby Garrett, weaved through the audience displaying other chairs with the artfulness of a Price is Right showcase model. Laughter and fun was had by all thanks to both the attendees and to the many hardworking people that made the event a success.
