Advocate Says More Action Needed To Protect Renters

Vermont has seen a number of large fires over the years, in Burlington, Brattleboro, Springfield and St. Johnsbury, to name a few, leaving deep scars across Vermont, damaging property and leaving people homeless.

  1. the last time i knew you had to be a adult to get a place of your own an these people chose where they live at if they rent an apt with wires hanging out of the ceilings then i would say youget what you deserve

  2. And at the rate Springfield is going, there won't be the option of renting a place that is in decent shape.

Given the fact that the town closes one eye and looks the other way when prominent real estate agents convert single family homes into multi-unit hovels and that somehow certain notorious slums escape even the most basic fire code safety inspections, it will apparently take a death due to fire to get something to happen.

  3. Unfortunately there are a lot of slum landlords in Springfield and some even from town.

  4. there are quite a few signs around town against the rental ordinance--they appear to be in front of the homes and/or rental properties of some of the town's own questionable "....lords" -- the signs have prompted me to vote in favor of keeping the ordinance.

  5. Imagine how many people realize the vote for / against the ordinance is just 9 short days away? Probably not many. Beside who would think to vote for anything in August?

Most Spfld voters wont go the poles to cast a vote. Those signs are appearing in front of the Landlords apartments anyways. If I were a landlord, I would support the measure. Knowing that my apartment passed the muster of all inspections, it would be a safer place to rent for sure. The less than desirable units would be forced to clean it up and make it safer.

    1. You would think that the landlords would want the inspections. I think it questionable why they do not want it. Do they think their properties would not pass inspection? Looking around town I suspect a lot of them would not pass

    2. I didn't know there was a vote until I saw the signs on the lawns urging me to vote against it. Now I will be sure to vote for it!

  6. The vote is to RESCIND the ordinance so you NEED to vote NO!!!
