Bellows Falls Wins/Springfield & Fall Mountain Lose Submitted by VT Journal on Tue, 10/22/2013 - 3:49pm By BILL MURPHY The Vermont Journal/The Shopper REGION -No one outside their football programs expected Springfield or Fall Mountain to win last week and they didn't. They both had their moments early, before their hopes were put to rest. Springfield fell to Bellows Falls 77-8 and Fall Mountain was beaten soundly by undefeated Pelham 35-6. There is often a wave of feeling for the underdog in sports and that feeling was present at Brown Field in Springfield Friday night, when Kevin Tallman's Cosmos made somewhat of a stand in the first half, before Bob Lockerby's Terriers literally ran away with things. In the believe it or not category, the Purple and White did not score an offensive touchdown for basically one and two-thirds quarters and that score came in all reality by the defense. The first time BF touched the ball, return specialist extraordinaire, Carson Fullam, fielded a punt at his own 35 and raced to paydirt with 8:35 left in the first for a 6-0 advantage. Special teams again came up big, a little less than seven minutes later, when the Falls offense was stopped for a second time, only to have punter David Dunbar take off on a fake punt for a 45 yard score upping the count to 12-0. Two more defensive stands by Springfield kept the score at the same numbers until 5:09 remained in the half. The Cosmos had the ball near midfield, when Austin Stack stole the ball from the ball carrier and was off to the races, when the whistle blew. Stack was inside the Springfield 20 with three Cosmos in pursuit with no chance to catch him, when all of a sudden a whistle blew. The officials ruled it an inadvertent whistle to protect an injured player and spotted the ball at the Cosmos 20, where they believed the ball carrier was when the shrill hit the air. The Terriers were not pleased with the call, but channeled all their energies in the right direction and it only took them and Stack in particular, one play, to score their first offensive touchdown from 20 yards out on a sweep to the right. Dunbar added the conversion kick for a 19-0 lead. Lockerby's team would display their superiority with three more scores in the last 2:34 of the half, adding 20 points for an amazingly quick 39-0 lead to take away any thoughts of either a close game or an upset. Kyle O'Rourke went 18 and 30 yards for scores and Ethan Illingworth ran in a keeper from 15 and two Dunbar kicks completed the first half scoring. The one sidedness continued in the second half with Jakob Mead, Kendrick Mills and Stack reaching the end zone for BF with Brendan Kelley and Dunbar kicking extra points. Mitch Greenwood had both the touchdown and the conversion for Springfield. Lockerby credited the Cosmos with their strong start saying, "They did a very admirable job of not letting us get loose for most of the first half." The BF coach was pleased that "We could build experience without someone getting hurt. This team keeps getting better," he added about his own team while pointing out "It was great that we could reward kids with playing time, who have worked hard all year." BF hosts first place Lyndon Saturday at 1 p.m. in what should be a gem of a football game. Springfield will be in action Friday night at 7 p.m. at Brown Field against Winooski in a wild card game. Neither team won in their regularly scheduled games and now get to meet in this wild card match-up. Tallman mentioned in relation to the strong early start of his team, "The kids really worked this week to get ready for this one, but in the end, it all comes down to execution and BF certainly executed much better than we did. On a positive note, the kids grew up a lot this week." Like Springfield, Fall Mountain came out strong, but their initial charge did not last as long. The Cats marched the pigskin down the field to the Pelham 21 on their first possession before stalling. The home team then jumped on the scoreboard immediately in their first possession with a 79 yard run on their first play from the line of scrimmage to lead 7-0. They built the advantage to 28-0 by halftime. Frank Brown felt, "we did a pretty good job considering how physical they were, but we are so undermanned because of injury and lack of depth, that we can't do much about it." Matt Wood had the lone touchdown for FM on a 17 yard scramble. Brown said, "Clay Gendron played very well both ways and Eli McGuire plays well every week." The Cats are idle this week and then hit the road one more time a week from Saturday at Somersworth for a 5 p.m. game. - See more at: http://www.vermontjournal.com/content/bellows-falls-winsspringfield-fall-mountain-lose#sthash.sI3XJqQ5.dpuf
Fire Kevin Tallman and save Cosmos football. Tallman has been a loser his whole career as a coach. How he was picked as the coach with no winning experience and being totally incompetent begs for an explanation. The players deserve better.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure who is talking of this trash about Coach Tallman; however it us pretty sad that you don't' t even have the intestinal fortitude to identify yourself. This is pretty typical for today's cowards own what you say and put your name out there what are you afraid of that you will have to defend yourself and back up what you say. Once again a modern day coward hiding behind a screen and not able to man up. Thanks for your time Ken Cooper
DeleteThis "problem" goes back to Springfield loosing it's feeder program back about 14 - 15 years ago!
DeleteAs a coach you can only teach so much! A child has to learn the game and when the soonest it's offered is middle school that's only 2 years to learn. If our town would get a feeder program back the numbers would come up as would the experience!! These boys are playing teams that have more playing under their belts! If you look at the roster our 10th graders are playing 11th and 12th graders. So that alone says something!
I think the big picture is we need more time on the field, we need more kids and most of all we need more POSITIVE SUPPORT from Park and Rec and Admin Staff!!
Anyone who supports football and wants to see the program grow should help these kids by stepping up and acting on it!!
A great program takes time to grow!!!!
Again,
Katie Cooper
Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, - stop your trash talking. We've heard it all before. Clearly you have a personal issue with Coach Tallman. Put your money where your mouth is and talk to the AD or the principal - someone who can actually do something about it.
ReplyDeleteWell said!
DeleteObviously you think having an incompetent coach is OK and voicing an opinion asking for his removal is trash talking. Tallman just blew another football season for the players. Good luck to them as they try to play college ball. The only way Tallman gets removed is if enough people voice their desire to have him removed for incompetence. Obviously nothing in the town of Springfield gets fixed without people screaming in rage before any action is taken. Unfortunately that is what it takes and not suffering in silence while a town is destroyed.
DeleteSO WHO SHOULD THE NEW COACH BE??????
ReplyDeleteBecause I don't see any input, these boys want to PLAY!!
I will say sitting on here ripping people apart isn't fixing anything!!
If you think there is a problem then it makes perfect sense to have a plan as how to move forward and I don't see that at all on here. People are on here running at the lips behind a computer pushing buttons. If you feel that strong as to what you think what needs to happen ....Then get on your feet and do what you think it takes! OWN WHO YOU ARE!!!! OWN YOUR THOUGHTS AND IDEAS!!!!!
Thank you Anonymous for your comments and example of OWNING IT!
Delete"Your Mother" .........REALLY? ARE YOU 5?
DeleteCoach Tallman's value to the Springfield football program cannot be measured by the numbers on a scoreboard. Anyone who has spent any time actually paying attention would know this.
ReplyDeleteI think they should get someone like Bill Bellicheck or Bill Parcells.
ReplyDeleteI find this blogg to be childish!...... No one except for a few want to OWN who is writing their thoughts and ideas!!
ReplyDeleteIf you want CHANGE then DO something about it!! Put up ...or...Shut up!!
The bottom line is to many people in this town DON'T want the football program. I know this to be true and to many people who have to much pull and don't even live here have stated this!!
I think the children should have a choice on what sport they play! All I ever hear as a parent is about the soccer team, I'm glad the children who play soccer have it to enjoy! However my son loves to play football.
I'm tired of listening to people put him, his team and coaches down!! That's NOT a way to support them! Do you think these children don't read this blogg? I'm amazed at what people are writing!
If you don't like what is going on............Then stand up put your BIG KID PANTS ON AND DO SOMETHING TO FIX IT!!!!
HELLO........ DID YOU LOOK TO SEE THERE IS MORE THEN ONE COACH! TEAM WILL NEVER BE SPELLED WITH AN (I) !
For the love of god people pull yourself together!
I will state who I am because I have NOTHING TO HIDE!!
Thank you,
Katie Cooper
It takes 3-5 years to rebuild a team. This cannot be done overnight. Blaming it on Tallman is as ridiculous as you anonymous armchair coaches who think you are a god to football.
ReplyDeleteThe blame should be on our town for taking away the pee wee football teams. Players learn fundamentals when they are young. Point in case is Bellows Falls. They start playing TACKLE football at a very early age and learn how to tackle and be tackled. At the age our players are learning to do this BF is learning passing plays, trick plays and defense. I saw this year, one of the coaches teaching a Junior how to do a 3 point stance. That shouldn't have to happen.
There are a core group of players coming up "through the ranks" that will help the Cosmos get back on the winning side with Tallman at the helm. Most of these kids have learned fundamentals and can execute them.
Both of my sons have learned a lot about football from coach Tallman. As sophomores this year they got a lot of playing time with about 5 or 6 other sophomores in varsity where JV kids should be playing and honing their skills.
I can see this team going very far with coach Tallman and I sincerely hope he gets to finish what he started. Like I stated, there needs to be a feeder program so players learn the "basics" at a younger age therefor, they can focus on skills at the high school level and become a contender in the league.
