Published November 28, 2013 in the Rutland Herald Man denies charges in home invasion By ERIC FRANCIS CORRESPONDENT WHITE RIVER JUNCTION — A Bellows Falls man is being held for lack of $50,000 bail for an alleged assault and robbery during a home invasion in North Springfield in May. Eugene Meyette, 27, pleaded innocent this week in White River Junction criminal court to a felony count of assault and robbery with injury resulting. Prosecutors filed a “habitual offender notice” under the state’s “three strikes rule,” which provides for enhanced penalties of up to life in prison when someone who has at least three prior felonies is convicted of another. Meyette’s criminal record includes convictions for two prior felony burglaries and one prior felony assault and robbery. Police responded to a 911 call from Fairgrounds Road on May 6 and found John Dodge, 73, standing in his front yard covered in blood, Springfield Police Sgt. William Daniels recalled. Dodge said two men had stopped and asked if they could borrow money for gas. When Dodge agreed and went inside to get the money, he said the men followed him in and began beating him to the edge of unconsciousness with a gun. Dodge didn’t recognize either of the two men, Williams wrote, but the next day police learned that Springfield resident Joseph Morin had allegedly been “bragging” about his role in the attack. Morin recently pleaded innocent to charges of assault and robbery with injury resulting. He faces one to 20 years in prison, while Meyette faces one year to life. According to police, Morin said he, Meyette and a woman used Dodge’s money to buy drugs. They tossed Dodge’s wallet and the bloody gun into the woods, police said, pouring soda over the items in an attempt to obscure fingerprints.
