Opinion: Contradictions of biomass project

The Dec. 31 deadline for a $40 million federal tax credit for the North Springfield biomass plant is approaching. As the deadline draws near, the explanations and statements by the developer’s representatives and town officials get stranger and stranger.

  1. Thank you for your well-written piece, Mr. Susman and for your provision of examples and for citing your sources. It is greatly preferable to the rhetoric we've been hearing. Just imagine what an intelligent discussion we could be having if all interested parties were as thorough and coherent.

  2. Just heard on the radio that Gov'na Shumlin wants to reduce the air pollution entering Vermont from OTHER STATES. I wonder if some of that comes from BIOMASS PLANTS ???? Wake UP.

  3. You're kidding right? That opinion piece by the former anatomy professor consisted primarly of rhetoric. The only facts in it had to do with the cost of maintaining and building roads. The rest was innuendo and snide remarks.

"Fatal flaw?" Nope, here is the quote from Cotter:

"“I am cognizant of the fact that the project would provide measurable benefits to the surrounding community and the state as a whole if it were constructed and operated,” Cotter wrote, citing increased jobs, wages and tax revenues."

Did we forget that part of it?

Obviously Susman's verbiage doesn't have to be very coherent for him to be able to wow his fans. The rest of us are able to tell fact from fluff.

    1. Looking in the upper right hand corner of this website:
      "41 scientists....."
What is yer take on that Jean...
And just what does this biomass plant have in it for you ??
      25 jobs ??
      Cheap elec ?
      Steam heat ?
      Truck traffic ?
Global Warming ? (Could use that today !)

    2. Jean is just a shill for the North Springfield Pollution Plant. Just reiterates the standard disinformation tripe and attacks anyone that dares to question the building of this stinking dinosaur plant that will just be another millstone around the necks of the citizens of Springfield.

    3. Nope not a shill. And at least I use my name.

Just someone who has been watching Springfield circle the drain for decades and who has put forth an effort to help it come back. I gave up because resistance to improving the town's situation is too high, and it is put forward by people who benefit from the further decline.

It is saddening to see so many residents intent on sucking what is left out of Springfield for their own personal benefit instead of putting the interests of the town first.

Seriously who of you thinks you can pick and choose what industry if any is going to come here? Think we are going to get a factory with $25/hr jobs for people to knit organic teddy bears? Not very likely.

And what alternative do you propose to replace the electricity that won't be available when VY goes offline? Note that "freezing in the dark" is not an available choice.

I am not attacking anyone but I am not afraid to tell it like it is. I went to the trouble to refute the points made in the Dodd-Kischko recording from an earlier post and not ONE of the rhetoric-spewing NIMBYs replied. Now why is that? Could it be because it is too much trouble to discuss facts and much easier to slap each other on the back and guffaw over their wit when they read opinion pieces that they approve of?

    4. Unfortunately Jean you don't tell like it really is when you attack good scientific facts, public opinions, and common sense with baloney rhetoric, calling out the Nimby's who have good reason to voice their valid opinions, and just complete nonsensical statements (knitting organic teddy bears, etc,). Most citizens of the town will NOT benefit from breathing the pollution this plant will create nor will they benefit financially from it like a select group of people will. Those select few are certainly not putting the interests of the town first instead of their own personal benefit are they?

    5. Aw, Jean may be the last person you wish to critique over "scientific facts." Have found Jean's posts refreshingly accurate and on topic as opposed to the juvenile, self interest, opinion so often found here. And if it isn't knitting organic teddy bears, it's packing rutabagas at Black River, or baby sitting for HCRS, or unskilled production line assembly at Jen Weld and Whelan.
There is a clear reason no high tech firm offering great paying jobs gives Springfield a look.

    6. No high tech firm offering great paying jobs will ever give Springfield a look once a pollution plant is built with a huge smokestack spewing pollution across the globe. Never! Putting up dirty industries and prisons built with tax payer dollars will never attract clean businesses and people that care about their quality of living and personal health. Just another nail in the coffin of Springfield and its citizens. Springfield....unimpeded by progress for 50 years by the likes of grifters like you and others of similar ilk.

  4. OK I am not really a member of "CRAP" (Citizens Rebel Against Progress) either. But what are we really to gain. High electric bills because of the cost to run and maintain a plant like this. The only ones to make money will be the owners. This is a make work project with some nasty pollution and traffic issues. If the town would lower the taxes imposed on manufacturing plants then maybe we would head in the right direction and invited companies like stuffed animal makers.
Start by taking some of the stuffing out of some shirts around here.
