Culinary Arts Competes in NECI Classic A team of Culinary Arts students each brought home a one thousand dollar scholarship from the New England Culinary Institute and a new knife kit when they took 3rd place in the Vermont Culinary Classic cooking competition hosted by the New England Culinary Institute (NECI). Kelsey Hildreth, Elizabeth Manuel, and Brenna Gallagher competed with Katherine Szuch, Melissa Morey, Lisa Wilkinson, as their support team. The group headed up to the Montpelier campus after practicing for the competition for past few weeks. This was an “Iron Chef” style competition. High school technical programs from around the state competed in the timed competition by preparing white bean soup, pan seared chicken breast, risotto, thyme beurre blanc and broccoli, as well as seasonal crepes and sauce, created by a blind basket of ingredients. This was strictly a student competition. The chef instructors from the technical schools are sidelined, and were not allowed to speak to competitors or coach them in any way. In addition to preparing each course, students also “plated” their dishes and presented them to the panel of judges. The annual event is a great opportunity for future chefs to get a taste of working under pressure, which goes along with any culinary career.
Way to go girls! I really wish they had this when I went to SHS.
