Published January 17, 2014 in the Rutland Herald Jacks squeak out 48-46 win over Springfield By POODY WALSH CORRESPONDENT WINDSOR — It came down to a test of wills and patience at the foul line as Windsor held on for a 48-46 win over Springfield in Marble Valley League girls basketball Thursday night. “We should have won the game,” said Springfield coach Joe Brown. “We lost focus and we let up.” The entire fourth quarter was a scramble as neither team could get up more than four points. With 42 seconds left Ashley Wilcox made one free throw to put Windsor ahead 47-44. There were two exchanges of possession before Springfield’s Kendra Dana was fouled and made both free throws and now it was a 47-46 Windsor lead with 12 seconds to play. Springfield took a time out and when Windsor put the ball in play the Cosmos were hustling on defense and got a turnover that was followed by a Windsor foul that sent Julia Stein to the line for two shots. She missed them both, but the Cosmos quickly fouled Elizabeth McCabe who made one of two to make it 48-46. There were still four seconds to play and Springfield tried to set up a play with shooting ace Chelsea McAllister taking the shot. She got the ball, but was too far away and her desperate heave as time expired was off the mark. The win left Windsor at 6-3 and coach Bruce Mackay is pretty happy with his team. “They are playing better than I thought they would,” he said. “We still have to learn how to play some game situations, but I thought we played tough defense near the end when it counted.” It’s been an up-and-down season for Springfield, which fell to 3-9. “Our philosophy has been to attack the rim,” said Brown. “I don’t think we did that enough tonight. Oh, well, tomorrow’s a new day.” Once again Springfield got a big game out of McAllister, who had 23 points. “She’s going to get her points,” said Mackay, who thought Haley Wood did a good job trying to hold her down. Windsor got a 12-point first half from Elizabeth McCabe and 16 in the game. Wilcox and Katey Comstock added eight apiece. The Cosmos, who have lost five of their last six, will host Mill River on Saturday. Windsor, now winners of five of their last six, will entertain Stevens of Claremont, N.H., on Tuesday.
