SPRINGFIELD — Stanley Wood, Post Commander of the VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars) presented a $500 check to Therese Burton and Jocelyn Zezza, co-presidents of the Springfield Garden Club, last week to assist the Springfield Garden Club in funding a special project called “The Blue Star Memorial.” The memorial will be dedicated to the veterans of the United States, who have served, are serving and will serve in the protection of the country. The project was named for the Blue Star in the service flag, which hung in windows of homes and businesses to honor service men and women. This project was adopted by the National Garden Club in 1944, has established routes, and more than 16,000 miles have been dedicated. The Springfield Garden Club is one of several garden clubs in Vermont who have participated in this program. The Springfield Garden Club has purchased the “Blue Star Memorial” plaque, which will be mounted on the stone and installed on Main Street in Springfield by the VFW flagpole. It is also the site where the Springfield Garden Club has landscaped and planted flowers. This area will be called the “Blue Star By-Way Marker” honoring our service men and women.
