Video: Springfield VT shooting response and challenge

I've had some time to think since the shooting yesterday. Here's my response and a challenge for our town.

  1. Thank you for this post - well said! It is wonderful to see a young man articulate what needs to happen in this town rather than all the negative posts usually associated with stories here.

One point I would like to make about the prison. The people released from there are folks that were already Springfield residents. The town made an agreement when the prison was built that only those who were residents of Springfield prior to incarceration could be released back to town. That said, if someone from outside Springfield completed their sentence and was released and was not under supervision, he could live anywhere he wanted to live. So please do not blame the Prison for the problems in town. Blame the person who chooses to commit the crime.

  3. 9:01, you're more than just a little naïve, aren't you?

RE: So please do not blame the Prison for the problems in town. Blame the person who chooses to commit the crime.

The prison is full of people who "[chose} to commit...crimes" and serves as a magnet for attracting the unsavory associates of those very same criminals, while at the same time its very presence conveys a "prison town" atmosphere that discourages good businesses and good people from locating to the town. It is literally a ball and chain around the town's ankles that will prevent it from ever returning to its former success.

Until the prison goes, Springfield needs to resign itself to a marginal economic existence and a future of rising crime statistics, all of which will impose even greater burdens on property tax payers to attempt to ward off its adverse effects.

    1. Why is Springfield known as a "Prison Town"? I don't believe St. Albans, Newport or Windsor have that stigma.
