Published May 19, 2015 in the Rutland Herald Leland and Gray crushes Springfield, 22-2 By POODY WALSH Correspondent SPRINGFIELD — The Rebels are hot. Very hot. Leland and Gray sent 16 batters to the plate and scored 11 times during its 22-2 Marble Valley League win over Springfield at Birsky-Wyman Field Monday afternoon. In winning their last six games the Rebels of scored 102 runs while holding the opposition to 20 and are now 10-2 on the season.. ‘I’ve never had a team that could hit like this,” said fourth year coach Eric Durocher. “They are patient at the play, find a good pitch to hit and hit it hard.” The Rebels also pitched the ball well Monday as Josh Donna spun a three-hitter with 10 strikeouts and two bases on balls. The game was called after five innings by the mercy rule. Springfield coach Rich Saypack said he could see it in his players eyes that “this was not going to be a good day.” He called it,“ The post prom blues. We played the day of the prom, took a day off and went back at it again today. We just weren’t ready to play baseball.” Leland and Gray pounded out 18 hits against three Springfield pitchers who threw 151 pitches in just five innings. Ten different Rebels had base hits, but catcher John Ploss stole the offensive show with five hits in six trips with six runs-batted-in. He had a triple, two doubles and two singles. Bryce Karg and Donna both had three hit games. In addition to the 18 hits, the Rebels walked seven times and their were six Springfield errors. In the 11 runs second-inning Springfield changed pitchers twice as Leland and Gray had seven hits, there were four bases on balls, two Springfield errors and two runs scored on wild pitches. Ed Shambo started for the Cosmos and he was followed by J.J. LeCouffe and Mike Kollman. It took an hour to play the first inning and a half. Springfield scored both its runs in the third on two walks, two errors and a catcher’s interference call. Matt Veysey, Kyle White and Tanner Shumski had the Springfield hits. Both teams play on the road Tuesday with Springfield going to MSJ and Leland and Gray to Poultney. “We’ll just have to forget about this one and move on,” said Saypack whose Cosmos are now 7-4.
