Smith’s former fiancé indicted by N.H. grand jury By Susan Smallheer Staff Writer | May 07,2015 KEENE, N.H. — A woman described by police as a girlfriend of alleged murderer Gregory A. Smith of Springfield, has been indicted by a New Hampshire grand jury on charges that she hindered police from arresting Smith and tried to intimidate a witness. Kristin Walsh, 29, of Keene, N.H., is still being held for lack of $20,000 bail on the two felony charges, according to a clerk at Cheshire County Superior Court. Walsh had been slated for a probable cause hearing, but after the indictment that hearing was canceled. Walsh, who was on probation at the time of the incident, is also facing charges for violating her probation. According to court records, Smith fled to Walsh’s apartment in Keene shortly after the April 18 shooting in Springfield, and stayed there until late in the evening April 19, or early on the morning of April 20. Smith is charged with shooting Wesley J. Wing, 37, of Springfield, to death after Wing confronted Smith’s other girlfriend about alleged drug activity in their neighborhood. Wing didn’t know Smith or his other girlfriend, Wendy Morris. Smith was arrested a few days later in South Londonderry, at a camper trailer owned by Morris’ brother. Walsh told police that Smith was a former fiancé, but they had broken up a few years earlier over his long prison sentence for stealing cars. But Walsh asked her apartment mates to lie to police about Smith visiting her apartment. The apartment mates said Walsh and Smith told them he had done something “real bad.” According to Vermont court records, Smith shot Wing after Wing complained to Morris about drug activity in their neighborhood. According to police affidavits, Morris complained about Wing to Smith, and then Morris and Smith followed Wing in their two cars as Wing walked to a neighborhood market, about a third of a mile away. Smith is accused of shooting Wing six times near the Southview Apartments complex. Walsh, in interviews with Keene police, said because of an ongoing health issue, she didn’t remember what had happened Friday, Saturday or Sunday. The shooting occurred in Springfield shortly before 6 p.m Saturday, April 18. According to the apartment mates, Smith was a regular visitor to the Keene apartment. Walsh told police Smith was an “on-again, off-again boyfriend.” Keene police say Walsh asked her apartment mate, Johnathan Vargas, to help Smith escape from Keene. Vargas denied he helped Smith and Smith stole a vehicle that Vargas had borrowed from a friend for his getaway. Morris has pleaded innocent to similar charges in Vermont of being an accessory after the fact, and has been released on non-cash bail. Smith is being held without bail.
