SPRINGFIELD — It was the last game for a dozen of the Cosmos on Brown Field Friday night. Springfield’s senior night was not what they were hoping for as they fell to Oxbow 36-8, but they held their heads high and are still in the playoffs.
The Oxbow Olympians looked like the dominant team for the first 15 minutes of the game as they owned the first quarter.
With 11:42 still left in the period, Olympian Dametres Perry would run the ball 45 yards for a touchdown. The extra point was good and Oxbow was up 7-0 just like that.
Oxbow would then march down the field on a drive that featured the Olympians’ running back, Nick Grant. The drive would end with Perry handing off to Grant, who than ran it up the middle for five yards and a touchdown. Oxbow was in command and possessed a 14-0 lead after the extra point and the first quarter wasn’t even halfway through yet.
Next, Dametres would show off his arm with a bomb to Nick Daigle for an 80-yard touchdown and 3:50 left in the first still. Two-and-a-half minutes later, Dametres would connect on a 5-yard pass to Eddie White. The extra pont was good and the score was now 28-0 with 1:26 left in the first quarter.
Oxbow would only score one more time and that wouldn’t be until the second half.
On the second to last play of the first quarter, Springfield would finally get their first first down on a 25-yard run by Jon Hildreth. Springfield had been trying to establish the run with Chris Ficklin up to this point, but were unable to move the chains. The first down would prove to be the catalyst the Cosmos were looking for to get going. Though Springfield would only score once, a two-yard TD run by Josh Hoy, it did more than just stop the hemorrhaging, it made it a game. The TD run for Hoy came two plays after he broke one off for 20 yards. These plays took place within the final two minutes of the first half. Springfield would go to the locker rooms down 28-8, but feeling alive.
The second half showed off the game plan the Cosmos were hoping to execute the whole game. Coach Rich Saypack said, “I don’t know what it is, we have tried four or five things to start fast, but we refuse to start fast.” This would prove to be the undoing of Springfield. The Cosmos took five quick “punches in the mouth” due to their slow start, but then not only controlled the ball, but the clock and momentum as well.
Springfield played solid the next three quarters, sticking to a ground-and-pound game plan with the occasional pass thrown in to keep the Olympians on their toes.
Saypack went on to say, “I’m proud of the second half, if we played like that every game we would be in a better position.”
The final score of the game would come on a 6-yard run by Jacob Stimson of the Olympians with 3:11 in the game. This would give Oxbow the lead at 36-8.
“It doesn’t feel real,” said Springfield’s Kyle Weeks when talking about his last game at Brown Field after playing there for the last four years on the varsity team. “People are always telling me to take it at your own pace because it goes by fast and it really has.”
The Cosmos (3-4) are in the playoffs next week, but will not know who they play until after the rest of the games shake out over the weekend. ͏
