Genesis Caregivers Protest Poverty Wages in North Reading, MA

On February 27th, a group of caregivers braved bone-chilling temperatures and wind to picket in front of the Genesis Meadow View Nursing Home in North Reading. Over thirty healthcare workers picketed for fair wages and affordable healthcare. Check out photos of the action on Facebook.
Genesis owns at least 36 nursing homes in Massachusetts. As Genesis continues a spree of nursing home buyouts across Massachusetts and the country, it is quickly becoming one of the local healthcare industry’s chief purveyors of poverty wages for caregiving staff.
Caregivers at Meadow View are living below the poverty line and are struggling to make ends meet for their families. Members of 1199SEIU at the facility spoke with the local station WUNI-TV27 about the situation. You can see the coverage here.
“Living under $9 per hour puts pressure on me each month. Living on this little at Genesis is not enough to pay rent, to feed my family,” said Gresencia Sanchez, a laundry aide at Meadow View.
“I have worked in Meadow View for three and a half years. As a mother of three kids, it’s difficult to pay rent, day care, and utilities. At Genesis, I work and live on an unrealistic wage,” said Hazel Robbles, a housekeeper at Meadow View.
Genesis operates more than 400 nursing homes, assisted living facilities and behavioral health centers across 30 states. Despite this broad portfolio of revenue generating businesses, Genesis pays many of its workers at or near minimum wage. Other actions are scheduled for facilities in Wakefield, Falmouth, and Saugus.

  1. Yup, so here's what we can expect: They will reduce staff and raise costs. After they've run the business into the ground, they will declare bankruptcy, Springfield will lose the business(es), and even more people will be on the streets.

Do we want to let this happen, as it has before?

  2. Somehow this looks like a net negative in patient/client care. The bigger they are, the harder we fall.

We can develop a strategy against this sort of piracy. Ask the Town Planning Commission what they've considered.

  4. It's interesting that they've set aside the exact same amount ($37.5M) for their legal troubles as they're paying for the Vermont properties. I agree with everything Chuck Gregory said, but I would add that while they're running the business in the ground, our innocent elderly family members are the ones suffering. Kick Genesis out of here!
