Edgar May Thanksgiving Day 5K a success SPRINGFIELD — Great weather meant a great turnout for the 3rd annual Edgar May Health and Recreation Center’s Thanksgiving Day 5K. With a race time temperature of 40 degrees, 152 participants kicked off their Thanksgiving Day in a healthy and active way. Walkers and runners headed out on a 3.1 mile course that started at Springfield Hospital and went out to Springfield High School and then back again. The top finisher was Kell Giffin of Shrewsbury, Vt. with a time of 17:26. The top female finisher was Crystal Morey of Bellows Falls with a time of 21:56. While the top male and female finishers were celebrated there were also some other great prizes given away, such as the youngest participant, 7-year-old Kenzie Wescott of Weathersfield, and the person who traveled the farthest to participate in the event, Andrew Azman from Geneva, Switzerland. The event also recognized the family with the most amount of participants which was the Spilsbury/Spicer family of Charlestown and Connecticut. This year the race was timed by Springfield High School's Cross Country team which was a beneficiary of a portion of the funds raised by the race. The Edgar May Health and Recreation Center would like to thank the event sponsors that made the event such a huge success: Bibens Ace Hardware, Lawrence and Wheeler Insurance, IPG Benefits, HCRS, Black River Produce, and HB Energy Solutions. Organizers are already looking forward to the 2016 Edgar May Thanksgiving Day 5K.
