2016-04-04 / Sports Cosmos look sharp in scrimmages WOODSTOCK, Vt. — If Saturday’s preseason scrimmages are any indication, the Springfield baseball team should be in pretty good shape this season. The Cosmos got the better of both the host school and Thetford Academy. Scorebooks weren’t kept, but Cosmos coach Rich Saypack said the scores were in the 15-7 and 9-4 range. Saypack was impressed with some of his player’s offensive efforts. “Between the two games Matt Veysey hit the ball well for us with men on base; 6-for-6 with several RBIs,” he added “Also having a decent day at the plate were John Stafford, Kyle Weeks and Zack Tubbs.” The coach also liked what he saw from his pitchers and defense. “On the mound J.J. LeCouffee pitched well, as did Dakota Bushey and Jon Hildreth. Nick Bedi closed out both games with a solid performance on the hill. “Defensively we cleaned it up quite a bit since our first scrimmage. Our starters at most positions had a fairly clean day.” One of the things a coach hopes to take away from a scrimmage is a good enough look at his players that he can help him shore up his limeup. Springfield gave Saypack a good view. “Between the two games we were able to get a good look at several players. We learned some things, confirmed some things and saw from our core group some pretty solid defense. We have work to do on the practice field, no surprise there. Once we figure out who our left fielder is I think we’ll compete just fine; for now that will remain our missing link,” Saypack said. The Cosmos host Fall Mountain in a scrimmage Tuesday afternoon at 4 p.m., weather permitting.
With all the money being spent on bats, balls, a new outfield fence and batting cage they'd better show a winning record!
