VTel chief rebuts critics

A wireless system built by Springfield-based VTel and largely paid for with federal money is supposed to provide Internet to virtually all of the state’s unserved addresses, but there are questions about whether the company is meeting that commitment.

  1. There is an aura of 'sharp business practice' and 'Artful Dodging' surrounding Mr. Guite's company, but VTel's Internet service in Springfield is of very high quality. So, there is a light in that bushel.

  2. If this Internet service is for smart phones, isn't it possible to just drive around vt and find those areas that don't have it. Simple test.

  3. This guy has been filling his pockets since Vtel came to town. Of course they should audited. Just more back tracking and playing hide and seek.

    1. I was told he is from the ENRON folks. Didn't they rip off lots of folks?Bought that land up in Hartland and moved the cemetery, something about a Weathersfield Selectman is helping him. Even put his picture on
      advertisements.

I couldn't find anything on Google about Guite and Enron; probably no connection. However, after winning the court battle to remove the cemetery plot on his Hartland purchase, he apparently isn't living there anyway. Haunted, maybe?

Re: "sharp business practices": Guite did introduce some Jack Abramoff-style corruption into Vermont with his hiring of the woman, Karen Marshall, who was the state's telecom regulator. Nobody got punished for it, and the next businessman who does the same Guite gambit will corrode our political ethics framework just that much more. Pretty soon, it'll be normal, and we'll have lots of people working for the state not because they believe in civic service, but see it as a step toward getting a better job from the people they're supposed to regulate.

In the movie, "Cactus Jack and the United States of Money," Abramoff's famous line is, "... so after you've done them a few favors you say, 'You know, when you finish your job [working on Capitol Hill] here, we'd like you to go to work for us. And that's when you have them.' "

  5. Does anyone know how many Springfielders VTEL employees? They seem like a good company to me.

They are not a good company in that they broke the union. In the battle between stakeholder value and shareholder value, VTel came down on the wrong side. Springfield will have a lot more impoverished retirees as a result of VTel's worship of the bottom line rather than a respect for the community.
