WESTMINSTER — The Green Mountain, Springfield and Windsor cross country teams joined several other Vermont schools at the Bellows Falls meet Tuesday, enduring a strong sun and hot temperatures on the course laid out around the school grounds.
In the end the host Terriers would post the top local finishes in the boys varsity race, as well as in the boys and girls individual varsity races.
Cody Tallent paced the BF boys with a time of 18:15, good for 10th overall. It also put him in fifth in the Marble Valley League portion of the meet (Stratton Mountain competed but is not a member of the MVL).
Lia Clark led the local ladies. The lone Terrier in the varsity girls race, she took 13th overall (10th MVL), posting a time of 23:20.
Stratton Mountain, which uses the cross country season as a training ground for ski season, was dominant in both meets. The Wildcats scored 27 team points and had five top 10 finishes in the boys meet and the girls scored 29 points with three top 10 showings.
Aside from SMS, the battle for second place in the boys race was a tight one. Brattleboro, with a trio of top 10s, scored 71 points to beat out BF's 77 for runner-up honors. Mt. Anthony (94) was fourth, Thetford Academy (126) fifth, Woodstock (171) sixth and Springfield (176) seventh.
On the girls side, the four local schools either did not field full teams or did not have enough runners complete the race to post a team score. Coming in second was Brattleboro with 50 points, Mt. Anthony (61) was third, Thetford Academy (82) fourth and Woodstock (102) fifth.
In addition to Tallent, three other runners earned top 10 finishes in the MVL boys race. Green Mountain's Ben Haseltine finished sixth (11th overall), clocking 18:50. He was just ahead of BF's Nicolas Potter at the finish line. Potter placed seventh in the MVL race (12th overall) with an 18:56. The Terriers' Ian Wallace took 10th (15th overall) in 19:18.
Rounding out the BF scoring were Tim Salter-Roy (12th MVL, 18th, 19:55) and Jackson Purdy (19th MVL, 27th, 20:30).
Justin Smith (14th MVL, 22nd) was Windsor's top runner with a time of 20:06.
First-year runner Branden Bryant paced Springfield, posting a 20:24. That was good for 16th in the MVL meet and 24th overall.
Brattleboro's Isaac Freitas-Eagan won the race with a time of 17 minutes flat.
In the girls race, Lydia Churchill led Green Mountain with a time of 25:49. She placed 24th in the MVL and 29th overall.
Springfield's top runner was Kyra Peoples, 35th (40th overall) in 27:20.
Windsor had just one runner, Belle Moulton (no information available).
