Free festival to feature food, educational booths for beginner ice fishers

SPRINGFIELD, Vt. — Residents and nonresidents alike can enjoy a day of free Vermont ice fishing without a fishing license on Jan. 28.
Vermont Fish and Wildlife is hosting a Free Ice Fishing Festival at Hoyts Landing where department staff "will be there to help everyone, young and old, learn how to enjoy this unique and popular type of fishing," according to a press release.
Visitors can bring their own ice fishing equipment or equipment will be provided.
Warming huts will be available and visitors can also enjoy a fish fry and hot cocoa.
"Bring your own mug if you can," the release noted.
Education stations at the event will cover topics including:
• Ice Fishing Gear Explained
• Tip-up Techniques
• Using a Rod and Jig
• Fish Identification Game
• Knot-tying Know-how and tackle craft
