The host's DJ Snide and Reno Tuttle were double winners and Molly Kelly added a victory as well as Bellows Falls hosted a season-opening track & field meet Friday afternoon. Springfield coach Jim Fog was happy with his team's start to the season.

Brattleboro would win both the boys (159.33) and girls (149) titles with the Terriers second in each (133/112). Windsor was fifth in the boys meet and sixth in the girls. The Springfield boys finished seventh and the Cosmos' girls team tied Green Mountain for eighth. Springfield coach Jim Fog was happy with his team's start to the season. “Stephen [associate head coach Lawrence] and I were impressed with the many PRs we got today, even though they didn't add up to many points,” he said. “It gives us a foundation to build on when our team returns from vacation.” Boys Snide won the meet-opening 100 meters in 15.39 seconds to best teammate Shane Clark (17.32) and Windsor's Dan Dexter (18.59). Snide would add a come-from-behind victory in the 400 with a time of 56.52. Springfield's Chris Gurney, who also came from mid-pack early in the race, was second in 58.25. Tuttle, coming off an indoor state title in the shot put, won that event with a heave of 42-6 ½ and also took the discus with a throw of 137-4. Other local athletes placing second were Snide in the triple jump, Clark in the javelin, Windsor's Vincent Moeykens in the 100 and 200, and the Yellow Jackets' Dan Dexter in the 300 hurdles. Placing third were Dexter in the 110 hurdles, BF's Nic Potter in the 1500 and 3000, Keenan Lowe in the 800, Clark in the triple jump and pole vault, Snide in the discus and the BF 4x100 and 4x400 relays. Girls Kelly cleared 4-6 to win the high jump, besting four other who hit 4-4, including runner-up Emily Smith of Windsor and teammates Leanna Mager and Nya Patric. Other local runners-up included Brigid Hodsden in the 100 hurdles, Windsor's Anika Abrahamsen in the 400, BF's Megan Banik in the 800, Haley (last name, print unreadable) in pole vault, and Windsor's Katelin Morris in discus. Thirds went to Springfield's Maddie Macie in the 400, BF's Michelle Marchica in the 300 hurdles and triple jump, Jasmine Boucher in the 200, Keri Ticino in the pole vault and the Terriers' 4x100 relay. Windsor broke open a scoreless game with three runs in the top of the third, but the Slaters responded with four runs in their half. The Jacks came back with three more in the fourth, but once again FH retaliated, tying the game at six apiece n the bottom of the fourth. Right back at it, the Jacks countered with three more runs in the fifth — and this time they made the lead stick. “Our pitching wasn't the greatest tonight, but we got the job done,” said Windsor coach Jamie Richardson. “[Robert] Slocum did alright. Slocum relieved Seth Balch and allowed two runs while giving up five hits, three walks and striking out three. He shut the Slaters down over the final three frames. Balch went three innings and gave up four earned runs on three hits and four walks, with five Ks. “His command wasn't there today,” Richardson said. The Yellow Jackets' new leadoff hitter, Ryland Richardson, reached base in four of five plate appearances, going 1-for-3 with three walks, three runs and two stolen bases. Duncan Frazer was 1-for-3 with three runs, two RBI and two stolen bases. “It was nice that we scored some runs and battled at the plate,” the coach said. “Defensively, we played well. We only had one error.” Windsor hosts Otter valley Monday at 4:30 p.m. Softball Leland & Gray 11, Windsor 5 The story line was similar to Tuesday's where the Yellow Jackets held their own until late in the game. This time, Windsor scored a pair of runs in the third to overcome a 3-0 deficit and was only down 4-2 when the rebels put three across in the sixth and four in the seventh. The Jacks would attempt to rally in their final at-bats, scoring a trio of runs in the bottom of the seventh before L&G closed it out. “We played decent defensively,” said Windsor coach Phil Hathorn, “made some plays.” Erin Wierzbicki had another solid outing at the plate, reaching base safely four times. She finished with two hits, two runs and two RBI. Kristin Clark contributed two hits and two RBI, Mackenzie Davis had a ht and a run, and Katelin Wright, Carah Rugg and Jasmine Frazer added one hit apiece. Rugg went 6 2/3 innings in the circle, giving up seven earned runs on eight hits and seven walks with three strikeouts. Hathorn felt she got dehydrated late in the game. Olivia Brown got the win for L&G. “She threw strikes,” Hathorn said. “We took five called third strikes, which we didn't have Tuesday.” Windsor (0-2) visits Fair Haven Tuesday. Girls Tennis Kearsarge 6, Stevens 3 Cameron Cullison picked up a pair of wins, but the Cardinals came up short against visiting Kearsarge. Cullison won at No. 1 singles, defeating Sarah Long 8-1. She would then team with Alexis Parliman to win at No. 1 doubles, 8-1 over Long and Morgan Flinkstrom. Stevens also got a victory from Mariah Lawrence at No. 4 singles where she defeated Ellie Mellott in 8-7 in a tie-breaker. The Cougars' wins came from Elise Paquette, 8-6 against Parliman; Flinkstrom, 8-5 over Becca Moody; Felicia McSweeney, 8-4 vs. Kedgyna Dor; Katelyn Penrose, 8-0 against Clara Avery; Paquette and McSweeney, 8-1 vs. Moody and Lawrence; and Penrose and Annie Carr, 8-3 against Dor and Avery.
