North Springfield woman wins Vermont's first medal at 2017 National Senior Games

With a bronze medal in the Women’s 80-84 age group’s 100-yard backstroke, Margaret Nickerson of North Springfield has captured Vermont’s first medal of the 2017 National Senior Games which are currently being held in Birmingham, Alabama through June 15th.

Margaret Nickerson Wins Vermont’s First Medal at 2017 National Senior Games

With a bronze medal in the Women’s 80-84 age group’s 100-yard backstroke, Margaret Nickerson of North Springfield has captured Vermont’s first medal of the 2017 National Senior Games which are currently being held in Birmingham, Alabama through June 15th.

Eighty-three year old Nickerson’s time of 2:16.23 was close behind gold medal winner Mary Vass of North Carolina in 2:09.88 and silver medal winner Ann Aceves of New Mexico who finished in 2:10.91. Nickerson also competed in the 50-yard breaststroke on Monday June 5th, finishing 5th in 1:16.82. She’s not done yet. She will compete in the 200-yard backstroke and 50-yard freestyle on Tuesday June 6th and the 50-yard backstroke and 100-yard freestyle on Wednesday June 7th. Thirty Vermont senior athletes are in Birmingham to compete in over eighty events. All these athletes, coming from towns all over the state (East Burke to Brattleboro) qualified for the National Senior Games by competing and winning in 2016 in the Vermont Senior Games Association’s events.
