2017-09-09 / Sports Local Roundup: 2 in a row for the Cosmos SPRINGFIELD, Vt. — In the last three seasons, the Springfield varsity boys soccer team has scored six wins, with two of those coming from the entirety of last season. On Friday, the Cosmos matched that in only their second game of the season with a 5-0 win over Bellows Falls at home. “This is huge for us,” said head coach Devan McCarty after the game. “We’ve really put [the payers] to work this season and it’s starting to show.” It was a bit of a slow start for Springfield as players found their footing for the first 10 minutes, but the Cosmos were able to pick up the pace and start the scoring with a header from Max Leninski off a corner kick. Two back-to-back goals followed from Matt Veysey and Lucas Pugh to end the half with a 3-0 lead. With two minutes to go in the second half, the team again scored back-to-back goals from Kody Politza and another from Veysey. The work on offense was anchored by a very strong defense, which has only allowed four shots in the two games this year so far. Cameron Harbeson was again strong on defense, with outside midfielder Colin Bishop also putting in a good performance. McCarty, who himself was a member of the 2009 championship-winning team, said the team’s morale is building and he is hoping the Cosmos can build on the positive momentum when they go up against Twin Valley at home on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. “I think for us it’s going to be a good test,” McCarty said.
