After a 3-0 loss to Woodstock on Saturday, Hoisington said Monday’s win was a good way to bounce back with strong performances from Jenna Veysey, Julianna Albero-Levings, Hannah Crosby and Kayla Gibbons, who had quick feet all afternoon. Springfield were the aggressors in the first half and kept play in Terrier territory with superior speed and passing, resulting in multiple scoring opportunities and shots on goal. Although some of those opportunities were left wanting, such as a cross from Crosby that never found a partner following a breakaway with 34 minutes to go, there were plenty of other moments where the Bellows Falls defense and particularly the work of goalkeeper Madison Pencek kept the Cosmos from scoring. Pencek was busy throughout the game in net, stopping several hard shots from Crosby, Veysey and others late on to help the team stay in the game. With 28 minutes to go in the half, Springfield had already gotten six shots on goal to the Terriers’ two. Hannah Dupuis helped lead the charge against Springfield, but with the pace of Springfield in the first half, it was only a matter of time. Veysey’s “nose for the net” began scoring for Springfield, hooking the ball into the right side of the net after outrunning the Bellows Falls defense after a ball bounced off a Springfield player following a free kick with 17 minutes to go in the half. Albero-Levings made it a 2-0 game shortly into the second half off a pass from Gibbons. “She’s gonna be a player people need to start respecting,” Hoisington said of the right midfielder’s development. “She’s progressing at a much higher rate.” Following the second Springfield goal, Bellows Falls head coach John Broadley told the Terriers to “take the game” to Springfield, and his girls obliged, hustling the ball to the Springfield net. After two corner kicks in a row, defender Shanice Fischer took advantage of the chaotic scrum in front of the net to kick the team’s goal of the game past goalkeeper Mykahla Jasinski, who was solid all night. The goal and aggressive play by Bellows Falls confirmed that the momentum had swung their way, but unfortunately for the Terriers it didn’t last long enough. After getting a pass from Veysey, Crosby fired a high ball up and across the field from close to the midfield line, which ricocheted off a Bellows Falls defender and made its way toward the net. Pencek dove to the ball, scrambling to keep it from going in, but the referee called it a goal, leaving the score 3-1 Springfield. It was that goal, Broadley said, that swung the momentum of the game. “We had the momentum, we were attacking,” Broadley said of the period before the controversial call. Veysey would score again with roughly five minutes to go after outrunning the defense after kick from the other end of the field. With the loss, Bellows Falls goes to 0-4 on the season and hosts Leland and Gray Saturday at 11 a.m. Springfield hits the road to play Mill River on Wednesday. “Bellows Falls has got a lot of good things coming. They’re a young bunch this year,” Hoisington said of the opposition.
